Transportation Communication Specialist, 0.60 FTE 12-Hour Part-Time Nights

A Brief Overview

The Medical Transport Communications Specialist I performs a variety of comprehensive and effective communication activities in the Life Flight Communications Center at Stanford University Medical Center. Performs several duties including operation of multi-line telephones, radio console, weather products including radar and satellite systems, multiple computer database systems, mapping systems, and related systems and equipment in support of air medical transport services for patients who need admission or transfer from referring hospitals to Stanford Hospital and Clinics, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, and other health care institutions.

What you will do

  • Conducts initial telephone intake of information regarding requests for transfer of patients from outlying

healthcare facilities to Stanford or Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and identifies the appropriate receiving

service based on diagnosis and age.

  • Develops and promotes positive effective customer service relations with patients, patient family members,
  • visitors and staff; ensures accurate and timely dispatch of transport requests; ensures maximum staff

    productivity.

  • Maintains database on referrals and hospital locations; access, read and interpret county, state and
  • specialized maps for determining locations of accident scenes or referral sources.

  • Maintains interface with appropriate agencies to ensure proper coordination of transport services in
  • emergency and trauma-related transport activities; serves as primary communication link and liaison between

    Life Flight crews and medical teams, referring and receiving facilities / agencies, pilots and the physicians

    throughout transport.

  • Maintains records and makes written and oral reports concerning patient progress for transfer. Prepares
  • reports and other documents concerning or regarding patients.

  • May assist with training, assigning and reviewing the work of Communications Specialists.
  • Monitors, reads and interprets weather products including radar and satellite systems as requested. Monitors
  • weather, flight following systems and all other communication equipment associated with Life Flight

    transports, missions and related activities.

  • Operates communications center multi-telephone lines, two-way radio transmission and receiving console,
  • computer database, mapping systems and related systems and equipment in support of air-based medical

    patient transport services.

  • Partners with Nurses and Physicians and appropriately identifies the receiving service for patients needing
  • transfer to Stanford or Lucile Packard Children's Hospitals based on age and diagnosis.

  • Partners with Nurses and Physicians and distinguishes between emergent, urgent, and elective transfer
  • requests based on diagnosis.

  • Provides information on aircraft or ground transport availability, weather projections, locations and time
  • projections.

  • Receives incoming calls and set up teleconferences with attending physician(s), flight nurse, referral source
  • and appropriate receiving units, including advising physicians and nurses regarding the ramifications of

    denying admission to patient protected under EMTALA rules and regulations.

  • Responds to emergency transport calls and dispatch Life Flight medical crew according to established
  • procedures; provides information on aircraft or ground transport availability, weather projections, locations

    and time projections.

    Education Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Experience Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to independently perform the full range of Life Flight dispatch and related communication support functions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Ability to perform complex tasks, prioritize multiple projects, and work under pressure to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and apply sound judgment
  • Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job

    Base Pay Scale : Generally starting at $38.55 - $50.11 per hour

    The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
