Stanford University has an immediate opening for a Director of Disability Advising in the Office of Accessible Education (OAE). This position will be in the Division of Student Affairs, which supports many student experiences outside the classroom in our residences, community centers, student organizations, health center, career education center, and more.


The mission of the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) is to promote an accessible and inclusive environment for all students with disabilities. Through both academic and housing accommodations, we work to mitigate physical and attitudinal barriers that students might face. We are dedicated to supporting students with disabilities to give them the opportunity to perform at their highest academic potential. We also strive to promote the inclusive environment they need to experience full membership in our diverse Stanford community.


The Office of Accessible Education is a department within the division of Student Affairs which centers its work on case-by-case accommodation determinations and programmatic development for furthering accessibility and inclusion across the campus. This person will provide strategy, vision and direction regarding issues and objectives impacting disability advising services offered by the Office of Accessible Education; in addition, this role manages the work of other employees, including managers. The position will report to Executive Director, OAE.

We’re looking for a person who can be an active collaborator in our ongoing work:

  • Ensuring every student feels a sense of belonging by removing or mitigating barriers to participation fully as a member of the Stanford community.
  • Engaging with senior management and cross functional areas and academic departments toward equitable access.
  • Remaining up-to date on best practices and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage the work of disability advising (DA) staff, processes, and projects, to implement the strategic goals of the unit and Student Affairs; manage staffing needs, provide coaching, mentoring, and manage performance.
  • Identify and resolve complex issues with university-wide scope and impact and substantial significance which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment.
  • Provide strategic direction for disability advising services, including forecasting, planning, and managing staffing budgets.
  • Review exceptions to university, program or unit policies and procedures, settle grievances, and make recommendations that may impact the unit’s capabilities.
  • Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university, academic and administrative policies.
  • Effectively represent OAE programs and initiatives at senior level meetings, conferences, and to both internal and external constituents.
  • Cultivate and maintain both internal and external partnerships with collaborations, and by fostering educational and outreach opportunities.

Minimum & Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience, experience in a higher education setting preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite and Google Apps.
  • Experience using Salesforce desired, but not required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills suitable for reaching audiences ranging from students to senior leadership.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial and student data.
  • Excellent Leadership abilities to guide teams in implementing strategic initiatives effectively.
  • Strong understanding of the state and federal laws and regulations that govern disability accommodations in higher education.
  • Proficient knowledge of essential technological needs and requirements.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a hybrid position requiring at least three days of onsite work per week to meet student and departmental needs.
  • Able to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.

The expected pay range for this position is $121,000 to $136,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
