This recruitment is primarily being held to fill seasonal / part-time positions at Modesto and Woodward Reservoirs; however, the eligible list created from this recruitment may be used to fill future full-time or part-time vacancies within the Department.

THE POSITION

Stanislaus County Parks and Recreation is seeking Seasonal Park Aides to work the entrance stations at Modesto (Waterford) and Woodward (Oakdale) Reservoirs. Reservoir assignment is at the department's discretion and based on need. This position will complete tasks associated with entrance station activities such as greeting customers, collecting fees, traffic control, and operating the life jacket loaner stations, in addition to performing light maintenance duties throughout the regional park and other duties as assigned. This is a unique opportunity to get hands-on County work experience to take into future permanent full-time careers with Stanislaus County.

The seasonal work schedule will be up to 40 hours per week and will include working weekends and holidays. Morning shifts may start as early as 5 : 00 a.m. Late shifts will vary with start times from 1 : 30 p.m. to 5 : 30 p.m. The Park Aide will be required to work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions, including high-heat temperatures. Seasonal positions will be needed through mid-September.

Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

Part-time, extra-help, or seasonal is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is non-benefited except for participation in a 401(a) program with Nationwide. As a part-time or seasonal Stanislaus County Employee, you will be eligible for the benefits listed below :

Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Craft / Maintenance / Institutional bargaining unit for labor and relations purposes.

Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months.

Typical Tasks

  • Collect and account for park fees;
  • Operate a cash register;
  • Assist visitors, answer questions concerning County parks, rules and regulations;
  • Prepare written financial reports and records;
  • Operate a two way radio;
  • Drive vehicles to carry workers to and from various job sites;
  • Perform litter pick-up and garbage collection duties;
  • Clean restrooms and public facilities;
  • Perform maintenance tasks of a routine nature, such as painting, watering trees and shrubs, mowing lawns, cuttingweeds, raking leaves and sweeping sidewalks;
  • Perform manual labor;
  • Operate power equipment such as lawn mowers, hedgers, tractors, and trucks;
  • Supervise assigned non-departmental workers; and
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education / Experience)

    KNOWLEDGE

  • Cashiering methods and techniques, involving cash registers; and
  • Park maintenance techniques and landscaping practices.
  • SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Deal tactfully and effectively with the public;
  • Work weekends, holidays and irregular hours;
  • Handle money, prepare reports and maintain records;
  • Ability to work cohesively with others to achieve a goal;
  • Physically stand six to eight hours daily in a confined space;
  • Operate two way radio.
  • Follow instructions, both oral and written;
  • Perform manual labor, including lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, walking, reaching and manual dexterity;
  • Work outdoors in the heat and cold, around chemicals, dust and fumes;
  • Lift and dump full garbage cans and / or other heavy objects; and
  • Supervise non-departmental labor.
  • EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
  • DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six (6) months parks, recreation, or maintenance experience;
  • One (1) year of work experience / employment;
  • Currently enrolled in college level classes or technical school (Must attach proof of enrollment with application to be considered for this desirable); or
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

    EXAMINATION PROCESS

    Most County recruitments consists of the steps detailed below and are governed by Merit Principles. The examination process ensures that all applicants are given the same opportunity to gain employment within Stanislaus County.

  • Written Examination. Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.
  • Oral Examination. Applicants are invited to a panel interview in which they will be evaluated by County subject matter experts.
  • Eligible Lists. Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months, but may be extended up to eighteen months.
  • TENTATIVE RECRUITMENT SCHEDULE
