Position Title: School Nutrition Assistant Manager
Term of Employment: Full Time; 10 months

General Statement of Job
The School Nutrition Assistant Manager assists the School Nutrition Manager by performance of some managerial tasks and takes charge in absence of the manager. The employee has knowledge of preparation of foods served in school cafeterias. Employees are expected to understand, follow, and train others in federal, state, and local regulations governing School Nutrition programs. General guidelines are provided for work to be done. The employee is expected to solve problems that arise in the preparation and serving of food as well as delegate and oversee the work of School Nutrition Assistants.
Essential Job Functions
- Prepares and serves a variety of specialized foods.
- Uses standardized recipes.
- Confers with the manager in projecting quantities of food to be needed.
- Determines tasks to be performed by staff members.
- Assigns selected tasks to assistants with deadlines.
- Instructs other employees in food preparation and serving techniques.
- Inspects kitchen activities to ensure safety and sanitation procedures are followed.
- Reports improper actions to the manager.
- Inspects, on a continuing basis, all departments within the cafeteria area.
- Observes operation of total program and performance of staff.
- Assists manager in checking deliveries for accuracy in quantities and acceptability of quality.
- Assists manager in conducting inventories.
- Assists manager in preparing reports.
- Directs day to day activity in conjunction with the manager and in the manager’s absence.
- Provides leadership to subordinates through instruction and demonstration.
- Serves as interim Manager in the absence (short- and long-term) of the Manager.
- Assumes any responsibilities as designated by the School Nutrition Manager.
- Additional assignments as assigned by the supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Skill in use of food preparation equipment.
- Ability to schedule tasks for self and others.
- Considerable knowledge of Meals Plus Point of sale software and ability to process transactions using computer and cash register in an efficient and accurate manner.
- Ability to read and comprehend equipment manuals and other routine written materials.
- Ability to make minor adjustments to equipment.
- Ability to communicate positively with school staff, students, parents, and visitors.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to comprehend guidelines and train Assistants.
- Considerable knowledge of USDA meal patterns
- Operation of all equipment
- Food preparation and standards of sanitation and safety.
- Ability to work in a standing position with exposure to frequent noise and heat.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Training and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- ServSafe Manager Certification (will be provided upon employment)
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
- Requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force.
- Frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions.
- Work has standard vision requirements.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by using the spoken word. Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
- Requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts.
- Requires use of measuring devices.
- Occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts.
- May be exposed to the risk of electrical shock and blood borne pathogens.
- Occasionally may be exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), to fumes or airborne particles, to toxic or caustic chemicals, to extreme cold (non-weather), and to extreme heat (non-weather).
- May be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- Must be able to work in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
