Stantec is seeking a field ecologist tech with a specific focus on Florida. Qualified candidates will be expected to provide technical assistance in field data collection (e.g., wetlands, habitats, wildlife, water quality), assessment, planning, regulatory consultation, environmental permitting, and restoration projects. Under the supervisor of a Project Manager, this candidate will also support our clients and Florida staff that includes accomplished biologists, ecologists, water resource specialists and engineers. This position includes the opportunity to assist on various projects within the power, oil and gas, land management and real estate, mining, and transportation sectors. Projects work will include activities throughout the state and the southeastern U.S.
Our staff include specialists in wetland science, threatened and endangered species surveys, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), cultural resources, hydrogeology, engineering, habitat and ecosystem restoration, environmental remediation, and GIS. We help our clients identify constraints and respond to opportunities within the changing regulatory and corporate environment through active engagement with the public, stakeholder groups, and government regulators. Our team members are involved in a variety of projects that may include Waters of the U.S. (WOUS) delineations and permitting, endangered species habitat assessments and surveys, NEPA, siting and routing studies, stream assessments and sampling, habitat restoration, siting and zoning applications, and complex planning and permitting for a variety of industries including renewable energy, transportation, power, government, and development.

Your Key Responsibilities
- Eagerness to learn and follow current data collections methodologies, protocol, and environmental agency regulations.
- Working with field crews to carry-out tasks related to ecosystem restoration and management on sites ranging from one to 100s of acres.
- Specific job tasks include invasive species identification and control (herbicide application, cutting, and mowing), native seeding and planting, and brush and tree removal. Depending on experience and proficiency, equipment operation and tools to conduct the above tasks may include the use of light and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws, brush saws, herbicide sprayers, ATVs / UTVs, tractors, and skid loaders with various attachments.
- Demonstrating skills with field tasks such as plant identification, invasive species control methods, ecological restoration techniques, and natural area assessments.
- Assist technical specialists in the field with biological (e.g., wildlife / avian), wetland delineations, aquatic, botanical, and water quality surveys or monitoring efforts
- Conduct field assessments and compile data and information under direction of project managers and/or technical specialists
- Enter and manage technical data and prepare graphs and tables as requested
- Assist with preparation of technical reports, plans, and permit applications
- Implementing a safety-first mindset and applying all established health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE) standards during all office and field operations
- Eagerness to learn and follow current data collections methodologies, protocol, and environmental agency regulations
Your Capabilities and Credentials:
- Technical or Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience in Environmental Studies or Biological / Ecological Sciences
- 0-3 years of related experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (i.e., Word and Excel required)
- Basic GPS data collection skills
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Familiarity with the current U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) listed species regulations and guidelines
- Detail oriented, resourceful
- Ability to traverse wet and/or rugged terrain in diverse, sometimes inclement, weather conditions while carrying heavy items
- Experience operating basic hand tools and smaller equipment
- Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
- Availability and willingness to travel overnight for multiple days per week, occasionally more than a week, and adaptable to schedule changes upon short notice - work related travel expenses are covered by the company
- Valid Driver's License with the ability to drive a company vehicle and an acceptable motor vehicle record
- Professional certification for FWC gopher tortoise authorized agent
- Experience with wetland delineations and listed species surveys in Florida
- Experience in native and invasive species plant identification
