Behavioral Health Specialist Job Description
Position Summary:
The Behavioral Health Specialist works with residents under direct supervision of Clinical Coordinator to ensure identified behavioral health needs are met.
Responsibilities:
- Know and adhere to STAR’s policies and procedures
- Performs initial consultation/screenings in a criminal justice setting.
- Creates an individualized plan of care for each assigned client receiving behavioral health services.
- Provides evidence-based treatment interventions.
- Conducts individual and group sessions.
- Conducts assessments related to imminent risk to engage in behaviors that would cause harm to self or to others, in consultation with the Clinical Director.
- Communicates with other departments, probation officers, and community agencies regarding client treatment.
- Attends meetings and in-service trainings, and participates in staff development.
- Seeks out and completes behavioral health specific trainings
- Completes documentation of services provided (i.e. case notes, reports, plans of care, etc.) within 24 hours
- Practice ethical standards in accordance with their respective Ohio licensing board and the Ohio Revised Codes for scope of practice
- Attend House Meetings for respective house assignment to relay pertinent information regarding resident progress and concerns
- Suggest ways to make programming better for the resident
PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS:
- Staff holding this position will be evaluated on the following intervals of employment: 90th day, 6 month, 1 year, and annually thereafter

- Position Skills: Knowledge of STAR’s Treatment Model, Teaching Effectiveness, Use of Redirection Techniques and Behavioral Reinforcements, Effective Intervention Strategies, Probation Communication, Community Relations
- Clinical Skills: Knowledge of different treatment modalities, Effectively utilizing modality specific interventions, Ability to adapt treatment approach based on client response, Appropriate use of additional treatment tools, Ability to assess effectiveness of interventions.
Required Knowledge:
Individual should possess required knowledge of clinical social work and/or counseling, interviewing, assessment, and evidence-based interventions; be able to write meaningful, accurate and concise clinical reports and records; be able to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action. Applicant must have the ability to deal with and solve problems involving several variables in somewhat unfamiliar settings and topics. Applicant must convey a strong interest in being involved in offender rehabilitation and specific concepts of Community Justice.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree in Social work, Counseling, or Social Science from an accredited educational institution. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Applicant must possess, or be eligible to obtain, LSW, LPC, LCDC, CDCA credentials.
- The applicant must show proof of holding and must continue to maintain valid permits, licenses, and certifications required for this position. Must have a valid Driver’s License.
