Job Summary:
The Navigator is responsible for direct care for homeless men by providing counseling, assisting with goal setting, obtaining benefits, and securing the necessary medical and social services to meet their basic needs. Encourage an atmosphere that is Christ-centered for residents by leading and/or coordinating bible studies, prayers groups, chapel services, special events, counseling, etc. while modeling the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Job Responsibilities:
- Responsible for direct care for homeless men by providing counseling, assisting with goal setting, obtaining benefits, and securing the necessary medical and social services to meet their basic needs. Lead and coordinate bible studies, prayer groups, chapel services, and special events.
- Conduct initial interview and assessment to determine individual client needs and services required also maintain a caseload of clients and develop goals and objectives with the client to help them end their homelessness.
- Responsible for all Coordinated Access referrals and scheduling pre-assessments for potential candidates.
- Assist residents with inquiries related to SOH’s programs and make appropriate referrals.
- Use a variety of resource material to make client referrals to a broad spectrum of community services.
- Participate in continuing training opportunities to improve skills as prescribed by the Manager of Resident Services.
- Identify problems, develop, and assemble casework records and make recommendations to the Manager of Resident Services.
- Assist onsite service providers (HCHD, MHMRA, VA, etc.) and supervise the screening and monitoring of residents seeking services.
- Oversee resident breakfast and completes roll call.
- Answer incoming calls when needed providing a prompt, courteous response.
- Walk through the building at least once per hour, except kitchen, and report any deficiencies and needed maintenance.
- Prepare maintenance request on items noted during walk through.
- Oversee activities in the Resident Services Area.
- Understand the rules and policies related to the residents and clients in all programs at the Men’s Development Center.
- Complete all required reports and documentation and submit them to the appropriate staff in a timely manner.
- Maintain order in the lobby area and Walk-In area and take disciplinary action as necessary.
Other Job Responsibilities:
- Other duties as assigned.
- Participate in Ministry and prayer activities, as appropriate.
Qualifications:
Education, Skills & Experience: Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in social services, psychology, theology, biblical counseling, Christian ministry or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with drug rehabilitation, drug counseling and/or biblical counseling is preferred. Valid Texas Driver’s License with acceptable driving record and current liability insurance. Must be detail oriented, well-organized, and able to update and maintain accurate client case files in a timely manner. Must have strong communication skills, both written and oral, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to speak in public and counsel individuals one-on-one. Proven problem-solving ability and able to work in a team. Must have good judgement in dealing with confidential Star of Hope matters and client information.
Be able to work respectfully, professionally and in a Christ-like manner with everyone, able to maintain required client/staff boundaries and possess a willingness to serve the Lord in a ministry that deals with homeless men, women, and children.
Ability to maintain multiple tasks and respond to immediate issues that need attention. Able to make abstract spiritual concepts understandable to clients. Good verbal and written communication skills, ability to work well with others.
Equipment Used: Telephone, computer, copier as well as other general office equipment. Fifteen passenger van.
Work Environment: A Christ-centered environment encompassing the entire MDC facility. Modern climate-controlled facility. Individual office with appropriate office equipment. Due to the nature of the population ministered to at the MDC there is the potential of exposure to various medical, physical, and emotional situations. Professional dress is expected and required. Jeans with no holes/fraying may only be worn on Fridays and only as long as a Star of Hope shirt (T-shirt, polo-style, or sweatshirt) is worn. Work Schedule may be subject to change to meet the business needs of the mission.
Relations with Others: This position has frequent contact with clients, staff, volunteers, and vendors.
Physical Requirements: Ability to move freely upstairs, bend, and stoop throughout Star of Hope facilities. Some carrying and lifting is required (up to 20 pounds). Possible long periods of sitting or standing.
