Position Summary
The Assistant Controller is a key member of the accounting staff, reporting directly to the ED, Controller. This position manages a team of accounting consultants responsible for various accounting functions, and oversees quarterly and annual financial reporting, equity and tax accounting processes and procedures. The ideal candidate has strong people leadership skills, a history of working collaboratively across functions, and possesses high technical accounting acumen.
Primary Responsibilities

Oversee quarterly and annual financial reporting, ensuring processes and controls are completed timely and effectively in reporting the Company’s financial position and cash flows

Manage equity accounting for stock-based compensation expense, and equity account reconciliation for the company’s equity incentive plan

Collaborate with Controller on treasury functions, including bank and treasury systems, policies, authorization levels, and necessary reporting requirements to third parties

Coordinate with outsourced tax provider for accurate tax accounting, quarterly and annual tax projections, and filings

Identify and analyze the impact of new or proposed GAAP accounting regulations, pronouncements, and other technical matters related to reporting (e.g., FASB or SEC rulings)

Develop strong collaborative relationships with other teams in the organization to understand the business and apply that knowledge to the financial statements and reporting

Work with financial statement auditors to complete quarterly reviews (as applicable) and annual audits

Month end and quarter end duties include review of journal entries, account reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and management of intercompany accounts

Assist in management of key system implementations and process improvements

Participate in support activities to executive management, including preparation of financial data used in quarterly budget versus actual analyses and the annual budgeting process, presentation of company operating results, materials used in quarterly presentations to the board of directors, and investor analyses

This position is responsible for supervising 2-4 full-time accounting consultants. Supervisor responsibilities will be adjusted as the company grows.

Requirements

Demonstrated strong technical accounting skills

Experience with clinical and R&D accruals, accounting for stock-based compensation expense, financial statement preparation, and in-depth cash flow experience

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience communicating to all levels in 1:1, informational, and presentation settings

Proficient use of MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Box, DocuSign, NetSuite

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Professional Experience

Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting is required; Master’s desired

CPA required

Minimum of 12 years’ total experience, including at least 3 years in a public accounting firm (preferably Big 4) and 1 year of management experience

Experience working in biotech is desired
Salary Range
The hiring salary range for candidates residing in California for this position is $176,000 to $220,000 annually This salary range is an estimate of what we reasonably expect to pay for this posted position, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation geographic location, individual education, experience, tenure, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is also eligible for bonus, benefits, and participation in Company’s stock option plan.
