Position Summary

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team as the Director of Scientific Communications, within the Medical Affairs department.

 

The Director of Scientific Communications is a critical position central to our development of VGA039 for bleeding disorders. This role primarily revolves around the strategic planning and execution of publication and scientific communication activities, encompassing the development of a scientific platform, medical narrative, scientific papers, posters, and abstracts. The incumbent will be responsible for creating, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive scientific messaging platform and publication strategy; collaborating and cultivating relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), healthcare professionals (HCPs), and patient advocates; and ensuring strict adherence to regulatory and industry standards in the dissemination of vital scientific information. This individual will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that our scientific data are effectively communicated to HCPs, researchers, the broader medical community, and patients/patient advocacy groups.

 

This is a new position and will report to the Executive Director, Medical Affairs.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Provide subject matter and communication expertise in bleeding disorders, VGA039, and the therapeutic landscape
  2. Provide strategic oversight for all scientific communication and publication activities related to VGA039, the bleeding disorders space, and real-world evidence
  3. Develop and maintain a scientific messaging platform and medical narrative for Star Therapeutics and VGA039
  4. Develop and execute a comprehensive publication strategy that aligns with VGA039's lifecycle
  5. Develop and maintain a robust publication plan, including the identification of key publications, timelines, and target audiences
  6. Ensure compliance with industry standards and ethical guidelines
  7. Create and oversee the development, submission, and communication of high-quality scientific content, including manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and presentations
  8. Ensure that all materials are accurate, clear, and aligned with regulatory requirements
  9. Collaborate with internal teams, including translational research, clinical development, regulatory affairs, commercial, and patient advocacy to ensure alignment of scientific communications with overall business objectives
  10. Ensure that all scientific communications and publications adhere to industry regulations, guidelines, and ethical standards. This may include the creation of appropriate SOPs to support this.
  11. Manage the budget for scientific communications and publication activities, optimizing resource allocation for maximum impact
  12. Build and maintain robust relationships with KOLs, researchers, HCPs, and patient advocates who may be authors on scientific publications
  13. Support the development of scientific content required to enable effective personal and non-personal communication and education
  14. Support Medical information activities, including writing custom and standard responses to inquiries, development of FAQ documents, and management of Medical Information requests
  15. Attend conferences to ensure smooth dissemination of scientific content, engaging with KOLs and HCPs, and staf Medical Information booths
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • Proven track record of successful publication planning and execution
  • Strong clinical/scientific acumen required including the ability to interpret, analyze, organize, compose, and communicate scientific data
  • Understand US Healthcare and industry compliance standards, including publication rules and GCP guidelines
  • Experience in writing and responding to Medical Information inquiries
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional, matrixed organization
  • Experience working with KOLs, HCP, or patient advocate authors is a plus
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools for scientific communication
  • Willingness to travel approximately 30-60% of the time, including internationally, depending on program/corporate needs

 

Education & Professional Experience

  • Advanced degree (MD, PhD, PharmD, or equivalent) in life sciences or related field preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in scientific communications and publication strategy within the pharmaceutical industry; strong focus on rare diseases or bleeding disorders preferred

 

Salary Range 

The hiring salary range for candidates residing in California for this position is $184,000 to $230,000 annually.  This salary range is an estimate of what we reasonably expect to pay for this posted position, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation geographic location, individual education, experience, tenure, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.  This position is also eligible for bonus, benefits, and participation in the Company’s equity plan.
