Position Description:
The ASAM Assessment Clinician is responsible for conducting comprehensive assessments to evaluate the severity of substance use disorders and determine the most appropriate level of care using the ASAM Criteria. The clinician will gather biopsychosocial information, assess risk factors, and collaborate with clients to develop individualized treatment recommendations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments based on ASAM’s six dimensions, evaluating medical, psychological, and social factors.
- Determine the appropriate ASAM Level of Care (e.g., outpatient, intensive outpatient, residential, withdrawal management).
- Interview clients to gather information about substance use history, mental health, medical conditions, legal issues, and social supports.
- Administer standardized screening and assessment tools (e.g., DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorders).
- Provide clear treatment recommendations and referrals for services such as medication-assisted treatment (MAT), therapy, case management, and peer support.
- Document all assessments and recommendations in compliance with HIPAA, state regulations, and agency policies.
- Coordinate with treatment providers, case managers, and referral sources to ensure continuity of care.
- Engage in crisis intervention when necessary, identifying high-risk situations such as suicidal ideation or acute withdrawal symptoms.
- Participate in case consultations, team meetings, and continuing education to stay current on ASAM standards and best practices.
Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Addiction Studies, or a related field(Bachelor’s degree may be accepted with relevant experience).
- Licensure/Certification: LCSW, LPC, LMHC, CADC, or equivalent preferred (or working toward licensure).
- Experience: At least 1-2 years of experience in substance use disorder treatment, behavioral health, or assessment-based services.
- Knowledge of ASAM Criteria: Understanding of ASAM’s six dimensions, levels of care, and clinical decision-making.
- Strong interpersonal, clinical interviewing, and documentation skills.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs) and ability to complete documentation timely and accurately.
- Ability to work collaboratively with clients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Understanding of cultural competence and trauma-informed care in substance use treatment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in ASAM Criteria training.
- Experience working in MAT programs, detox centers, or inpatient/outpatient treatment settings.
- LCSW, LPC, or resident in counseling
