Stark Library is seeking a part-time Shelver to serve and address the shelving needs of our Jackson Community Branch.
This position will be responsible for sorting and shelving library materials, reading shelves for accuracy, and straightening shelves to maintain a neat and orderly appearance.
We are looking for candidates who have a strong attention to detail, and the ability to work certain hours as deemed critical to the optimal flow of materials within the branch. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate a strong customer orientation that supports our mission and service to the diversity of the communities in which we operate.

Position Description
An employee serving in this position advances the mission of the Library by performing manual and clerical duties in a library. Employees in this classification are closely supervised and primarily responsible for shelving all aspects of the collection in either alphabetical or numerical order, replacing misplaced books, refreshing displays and performing other related tasks. Shelvers are accountable to a Library Manager or other employee serving as a shift-supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Sorts, shelves, and files various library materials accurately according to library classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, and alphanumeric);
- Reads shelves for accuracy and re-shelves misplaced items;
- Unpacks and packs boxes of books and other library materials;
- Performs routine support tasks;
- Maintains the neat and orderly appearance of work and public areas;
- Locates and retrieves library materials from public and non-public areas for library staff or library users;
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance;
- Works a flexible schedule including nights and weekends;
- May use computerized library system equipment to perform assigned tasks; and
- This position may require the performance of other essential functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.

Ability to:
Demonstrate technology proficiency at the basic level;- Maintain regular and reliable attendance, observing a flexible schedule including nights and weekends as assigned;
- Learn the Dewey Decimal System in an on-the-job training setting;
- Learn to use designated functions of the library computer system to perform assigned tasks;
- Sort and file alphabetically and numerically;
- Communicate effectively with the public and other employees;
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language;
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation, which takes place mainly in an on-the-job setting;
- Organize, prioritize, and pace duties and tasks for up to an eight-hour shift;
- Work cooperatively with other staff members and the general public; and
- Adapt to changing work priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to read and the ability to file or learn to file alphabetically and numerically. At least 16 years old, and the ability to obtain a work permit if required.
Physical Requirements
- The library environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations;
- Lift light objects (less than 20 pounds) and carry them short distances (20 feet or less);
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time while performing a variety of tasks;
- Perform repetitive hand, arm, and body movements, including lifting books on a continuous basis for up to an eight-hour shift;
- Push a fully loaded book cart in and around the library, including long distances (greater than 20 feet); and
- Reach overhead, bend and kneel to shelve books weighing up to three pounds.
