The Grants and Donor Communications Manager leads Starlight’s institutional funding requests and stewardship of grant funders, as well as managing philanthropy-related communications such as donor newsletters, annual reports, giving and engagement guides, and the end of year appeal.
Required Accountabilities & Deliverables:
- Strategically cultivate relationships with a portfolio of approximately 100 donors by making timely acknowledgments and finding meaningful ways to further engage with and connect them to Starlight.
- Manage annual grant requests, including writing, submission, oversight of spending and acknowledgement in accordance with gift agreements and reporting.
- Support multimillion dollar capital campaign by sharing campaign goals with potential donors, supporting prospect research efforts, securing campaign gifts and regularly updating campaign support materials.
- Research and qualify new prospects.
- In collaboration with philanthropy and marketing teams, manage donor communications such as donor newsletter, impact reports, giving and engagement guide, end of year appeal, monitoring website copy updates and maintaining a communications calendar.
- Provide oversight for Starlight’s Donor Relations Intern.

Preferred Education/Work Experience: BA in a relevant degree AND 5-7 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
- Clear ability to articulate passion for performing arts, civic assets and community engagement.
- Desire to seek, accept and implement feedback and openness to new ideas.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft applications and Tessitura CRM/ticketing platform.
- Developed ability to prioritize and balance multiple initiatives.
- Understanding of the Kansas City philanthropic landscape and stakeholders.
- Exceptional communication, meeting facilitation and relationship building skills.
Other Working Conditions: This role is primarily administrative/desk-based with a traditional on-site M-F work week schedule and general alignment with Starlight’s office hours with an expectation to attend night and weekend events as necessary and/or requested on an irregular/regular basis. Due to the nature of Starlight’s business, availability/communication may be required in cases of urgent or emergency matters during nights and weekends. This role is eligible for remote work per Starlight protocols.
