Job Description

The Deputy Director serves as a key strategic leader and a core member of the department's executive management team, focused on strategy and external relations. This position will guide the department's policy direction and developing long-term goals and priorities, in collaboration with the Director and department leadership. The Deputy Director will also play a key role in positioning the department with the public and stakeholders, overseeing public-facing teams including public relations, legislative affairs, and public advocate offices and fostering alignment between the department’s Offices and regulatory Divisions.

Key duties of the Deputy Director include:

  • Lead and manage key organizational units, including the Office of the Clean Water Public Advocate, Office of Climate and Energy, Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate, Office of Legislative Affairs, Office of Public Information, and Office of the Great Lakes. Provide visionary leadership, ensuring these offices operate in alignment with department-wide goals and priorities.
  • As a member of the department’s leadership team, provide input and guidance on organizational vision, policy development, and the execution of long-term objectives.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including other state agencies, local governments, and environmental groups, to ensure alignment and efficient implementation of environmental policies and programs. Coordinate with staff to implement processes to accept and investigate complaints and concerns related to drinking water and environmental justice issues.
  • Oversee the integration of climate resilience and environmental justice strategies across departmental programs Assure alignment of Great Lakes policy and strategies implemented.
  • Advise and contribute to the development of legislative priorities. Lead efforts to establish and advocate for legislative initiatives that reflect the department’s strategic objectives
  • Represent the department at high-level meetings, promoting EGLE’s vision and objectives.

Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.
Experience
At least two years of experience working in the policy, legal, environmental, or governmental affairs fields.

Salary and Benefits:
The Deputy Director will be compensated as an unclassified, at-will member of state government. This is a defined contribution position. The salary range for this position is $145,000 to $175,000 depending on education and experience levels.

Upon appointment to the position the following benefits options are available:
1. Elect the Civil Service Benefits Agreement Option. This option entitles the appointee to accrue annual leave, sick leave, personal leave, banked leave time, deferred hours and longevity credits; receive annual longevity payments; and receive terminal payments for unused annual leave, sick leave (for appointees hired before October 1, 1980) personal leave, banked leave time, deferred hours, and longevity benefits accrued during this appointment. Credits and payments will be made on the basis used for classified employees. Payments to appointees are limited to available appropriations. Appointees electing this option must use leave credits if they work less than their standard hours.
2. Waive the Civil Service Benefits Agreement Option. This option entitles the appointee to reach a separate agreement with the appointing authority regarding leave accrual and usage. Appointees electing this option are not eligible for annual longevity payments and cannot receive payments for any unused leave balances at the termination of this appointment.
3. Waive the Civil Service Benefits Agreement Option – With Sick Leave Accrual for Long Term Disability (LTD). This option is identical to the option “Waives the Civil Service Benefit Agreement Option”, except the appointee requests that the Civil Service sick leave accrual be maintained for the purpose of enrolling in the State’s LTD Plan. Appointees electing this option are not eligible for annual longevity payments and cannot receive payments for any unused leave balances at the termination of this appointment.
