The Prince George’s County Office of the State’s Attorney has an opening for an Experienced Assistant State’s Attorney (ASA) with our Conviction and Sentencing Integrity Unit. This is an exempt position, meaning the Assistant State’s Attorney is a political appointment and serves at the pleasure of the State’s Attorney.

 

SALARY:   $88,000.00 - $100,000.00 (Commensurate with experience)

TYPICAL DUTIES:

The State’s Attorney’s Office is looking to fill a vacancy for an Experienced Assistant State’s Attorney (ASA) position with the Conviction and Sentencing Integrity Unit (“CSIU”). The CSIU is an independent unit, separate from trial prosecutors and takes a holistic approach to post-trial justice. The CSIU is seeking candidates with at least three years of experience to review claims of wrongful conviction and/or unjust sentencing.

 

Typical duties for an ASA include:  

  • Handling all stages of a post-trial case from inception to completion including, but not limited to:
    • Contacting victims and witnesses.
    • Obtaining and reviewing voluminous records, including court transcripts and records, law enforcement documents, prison institutional records, medical records, and all other documents connected with or relevant to a criminal prosecution.
    • Investigation, which includes, but is not limited to interviewing convicted persons, witnesses, victims, attorneys, experts, police.
    • Preparing written post-trial pleadings and litigating them.
  • Attending regular CSIU staff meetings and working collaboratively.
  • Writing detailed memoranda and pleadings related to investigation and analysis of cases.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION FOR CANDIDATES:

Candidates must have graduated from an accredited law school and be eligible to practice law in the State of Maryland. Additionally, candidates must have a minimum of three (3) years of Criminal litigation experience as a prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, or innocence organization attorney in any jurisdiction. The ideal candidate will have excellent writing skills, will be highly organized and have an attention to detail, and will be a team player and possess the ability to work independently in a high-pressure environment.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Candidates must pass a background investigation, with fingerprinting.
