State Bar of Wisconsin Attorney Editor (30-hours per week, mostly remote)

The State Bar of Wisconsin has an opening for a creative, intelligent, detail-oriented person to work in our nationally recognized, award-winning book publishing program. The attorney editor will work closely with volunteer authors, production staff and other editors in the development and delivery of high-quality legal publications for our members. Who We Are

The State Bar of Wisconsin is a professional association, created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, for all attorneys who hold a Wisconsin law license. With more than 25,000 members, the State Bar exists to serve its members and the public by promoting the law and access to justice. We aid the courts in improving the administration of justice, provide continuing legal education and other services for our members, support the education of law students, and educate the public about the legal system. The State Bar of Wisconsin also provides public services -- such as attorney referrals and public education – and supports programs that provide reduced-fee legal assistance for low-income state residents.

What You Will Do

  • Edit manuscripts for substance, structure, and clarity; reorganize and rewrite as necessary, ensuring high quality publications.
  • Prepare the content of preliminary pages, summaries of developments, indices, appendices, tables, etc. for our PINNACLE product line.
  • Provide preliminary legal research and analysis to authors; clarify authors' meaning and verify accuracy of legal citations; update case and statutory law, to ensure accurate, timely, and relevant content.
  • Project manage assigned projects to ensure deadlines are met: track receipt of manuscripts, coordinate the work of others involved, and provide information to authors on the publication schedule and processes.
  • Foster relationships with members of the legal community, volunteers, and State Bar staff to develop a network for acquiring relevant content for PINNACLE products.
  • Provide assistance and resources to authors as needed throughout the publication process, ensuring excellent customer service.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams such as communications, seminars, customer service and marketing on the development of material for new and existing PINNACLE products.

What We Are Looking For

  • Law degree
  • Ability to edit complex legal materials for content, clarity, grammar, and style
  • Excellent research and analytical skills. Professional editing experience preferred.
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and copy editing
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word. Prefer experience with Asana, Adobe, Westlaw, and Fastcase.
  • Professional editing and/or appellate law clerk experience is desired along with an interest in new educational product development. An editing test will be required.
  • Ability to lead and influence volunteers to meet project objectives and timelines
  • Adaptability and flexibility to change, process improvement and new department initiatives
  • Ability to meet KPI’s including but not limited to budget and revenue goals, on time delivery, editorial quality, author satisfaction, reader engagement, and project budget variance
