JOB SUMMARY:
The Internal Auditor is responsible for performing independent, objective audits to assess the effectiveness and soundness of internal controls, risk management, and governance processes within the credit union. This position ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, internal policies and procedures, and established industry best practices. Further responsible for identifying areas for operational improvement and fraud prevention, as well as developing, monitoring, and delivering reports for credit union action items, while liaising directly with cross-functional leadership within the organization.

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assess whether internal accounting controls are adequate to ensure compliance with Credit Union goals, objectives, policies, procedures and applicable laws and regulations.
- Provide support and make recommendations in establishing auditing procedures and techniques to be used in the Credit Union.
- Work with the Internal Audit Manager in developing, executing, and monitoring an annual audit plan and timetable for all projects and activities, as well as coordinating the compliance audit program.
- Review financial data and supporting records regarding material assets, liabilities, net worth, income, and expenditures to determine the reliability and integrity of financial reporting.
- Obtain, analyze, and appraise data as a basis for an informed objective opinion on the systems and activities being reviewed.
- Determine whether operating policies and procedures are adequate to measure and control the economical and efficient use of resources.
- Examine information systems to ensure output is accurate and complete.
- Inspect items in books of original entry to determine if accepted accounting procedures were followed in recording transactions and if such entries are in accordance with Credit Union policy. Ensure all subsidiary ledgers have been reconciled to the general ledger.
- Coordinate and conduct investigations of suspected and actual internal fraud. Conduct investigations or special audits at the request of management.
- Examine applicable personnel records to determine compliance to organization policy and regulatory requirements (assigned limits, keys, authorities, etc.).
- Prepare written and verbal audit reports for management and the Supervisory Committee, including routine, bi-annual, and annual and/or as needed basis.
- Communicate internal control weaknesses to Management/Supervisory Committee based on audits.
- Review samplings of all new loans for exceptions to policies and procedures.
- Serve as staff liaison with outside auditors and regulatory examiners, demonstrating the highest levels of professionalism, confidentiality, and tact.
- Maintain working knowledge of all developments in regulatory requirements, general accounting principles, and other applicable audit techniques, ensuring adherence to NCUA, State Regulations, and internal polices.
- Maintain audit work-papers and files to evidence the audit work performed. This includes administrative oversight and support for the credit union management system for warehousing audit findings, follow-up, and related activities.
- On an ongoing basis, review laws and regulations that impact the Credit Union's compliance requirements including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act; AML; Reg P; Patriot Act, FACT Act, and other laws and regulations related to lending.
- Collaborate with various departments to improve processes, reduce risk exposure, and enhance operational efficiency.
- Participate in special projects, process improvement initiatives, and system implementations as assigned.
- Maintain professional knowledge of audit standards, risk assessment methodologies, and industry trends through training and certifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
- Excellent organization, time management, and project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage competing projects and assignments effectively.
- Thorough knowledge of Credit Union products, services, policies, and procedures.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of regulatory compliance necessary to successfully perform job responsibilities.
- Proficient in audit software, data analysis tools, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and Credit Union systems and software required to perform job duties.
- Ability to perform audits and as necessary conduct investigations with a high-degree of patience, professionalism, and tact.
- Ability to effectively work with Members of Executive, Board, and Senior Leadership to research, recommend, and resolve operational opportunities.
- Knowledgeable of auditing principles, risk assessments, and internal control frameworks.
- Ability to manage and review the work-product of junior/other staff, while providing relevant coaching and mentorship in coordination with the Internal Audit Manager.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy at all times in performing job duties. High level of integrity and objectivity.
Education/Experience:
- Education or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, Finance or equivalent, in addition to 3 plus years' progressively responsible experience in internal auditing, external auditing, compliance, risk management, or related field.
- Financial Services experience preferred but not required.

Relevant professional certifications are preferred but not required. This may include but is not limited to:
- Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
- Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE)
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Physical Requirements:
