What are the responsibilities and job description for the Museum Attendant position at State Fair Community College?
The museum attendant should have a positive attitude, enjoy meeting new people, be conscientious in record keeping, and be reliable. The attendant greets visitors, answers the museum telephone, offers information about the museum, collects demographic information, tracks visitor numbers, monitors security cameras, and handles exhibition catalogue sales while staffing the front desk of the museum when it is open to the public. Most hours worked will be 1-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays on alternating weekends; some hours will be for weekday and/or evening events.
Responsibilities
Have the museum open to the public during their scheduled shift.
- Arrive on time and stay until your shift is over.
- Open the museum by turning on all lights, security monitors, and unlocking exterior building doors, interior museum doors, and Goddard Gallery doors.
- Close the museum by turning off all lights, security monitors, lock exterior building doors, museum doors, and Goddard Gallery doors.
- Never leave the museum unlocked and unattended.
- Be aware of who is in the museum and that they conduct themselves in a way that poses no risk to the artwork.
- Monitor visitors by regularly checking the security camera display.
- Make sure no one touches the art.
- Do not allow any food or drink in the galleries, or other areas of the museum.
- Behave in a professional and courteous manner with all visitors.
- Come dressed in casual business attire.
- Keep an accurate count of visitors and demographic information and ask visitors to sign the guest book.
- Keep the desktop clean and its contents organized.
- Answer the telephone and respond to the question or transfer the caller to the correct staff member.
- Know the museum merchandise and the prices for each.
- Handle all cash register transactions according to museum procedures and count down the drawer at the end of the day.
- Be prepared for questions related to the museum and exhibitions.
- Read the information provided on the exhibitions.
EDUCATION
OPENING RECEPTIONS
Museum attendants are asked to consider signing up to work during the opening receptions for exhibitions, held two or three times a year, typically on a Thursday night, from 6-8 p.m.
COLLEGE BREAKS
The museum is generally closed when campus is closed.

Museum hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 1-5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
Department funded positions are available for both student and non-student applicants. These positions are limited to a maximum of 600 hours per fiscal year or 550 hours per fiscal year if the candidate is a retiree of the PSRS or PEERS Missouri Retirement System. A fiscal year is defined as July 1 to June 30. In addition, a part time employee can not work more than 17 hours per week unless the position has been budgeted and approved to work beyond this maximum.
