What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Success Navigator position at State Fair Community College?
Overview: Under general supervision, a Student Success Navigator fosters the student's sense of responsibility for academic progress, assists in obtaining accurate information about educational and career options, academic requirements, policies and procedures. A Navigator directs the student in developing achievable career and educational goals, including the creation of an individual plan to track progress toward goal achievement. Navigators are also responsible for creating a welcoming environment while supporting connections to the State Fair Community College (SFCC) community. Also, Navigators demonstrate a commitment to working with a diverse student population in a student centered academic environment.
The Student Success Navigator provides academic advising and support for students enrolled in specific academic programs, as determined by the college.
A Navigator consistently applies SFCC policies, understands academic program
completion requirements, transfer issues, and uses excellent written, verbal, and
interpersonal communication skills. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Assist with the application of academic knowledge real-life goals.
- Teach and support the use of academic technology (Starfish, mySFCC, Canvas,
- Help students assess their personal circumstances and support systems when
- Follow up with students using flags, referrals, kudos, outreach, and To-Do items to
- Identify at-risk students and make referrals to on- and off-campus resources to
- Assist students with various appeals and grievances processes, such as financial
- Guide transfer students through institution selection and transfer steps and/or
- Participate in orientations, recruitment events, and lead workshops and activities
- Respond to student alerts and success indicators.
- Guide students in planning their own strategies for overcoming academic probation,
student success.
- Discuss academic "fit" and use tools like O*Net for career matching and
- Provide final course enrollment approval for students facing academic probation.
- Interpret, develop, and implement college policies to address student concerns.
- Provide consultation and training to faculty, staff, and students, particularly on
- Liaison with financial aid on individual student issues and next steps regarding
- Work independently and collaboratively toward departmental goals.
- Manage caseloads of 300 students, create academic plans, and guide students
- Support students through developmental milestones and implement targeted
- Proficient in Microsoft Office/365, basic internet search skills and other electronic
- Strong written/oral communication skills.
- Demonstrate student-centered mindset and promote student success across
- Ability to independently achieve goals, plan, and implement programs.
- Work efficiently with faculty and staff as a member of various committees and
- Effectively use campus technology to support student enrollment and maintain
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of learning theory, student development, and basic principles of crisis
motivational interviewing.
- Understanding of how course enrollment impacts Title IV (FAFSA) funding.
- Decisiveness and ability to make consistent, fair decisions based on data.
- Resilience and tolerance for ambiguity.
- Experience in and commitment to the community college mission.
Experience
- Required: Human services and/or customer service background.
- Preferred: Experience in academic advising/retention in higher education;
alert and degree audit software.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required. Social/Behavioral Sciences, Education,

Cost per month to cover family: $54.24 for Plan 1 or $64.48 for Plan 2 coverage.
2. Additional life insurance is available to purchase for employee, spouse, and eligible children. Rate quotes are specific to age.
3. The cost for the basic additional life insurance plan is $1.58 per month for $10,000 spouse coverage and $2,500 dependent child coverage. This is a total monthly cost, regardless of the number of eligible dependents covered.

AFLAC insurance is available and is paid by the employee through payroll deduction.
Medical, dental and vision insurance premiums can be deducted before taxes.
- 4 hours per pay period from hire date through 5 years
- 5 hours per pay period from 6 years through 15 years
- 6 hours per pay period for 16 years or more
- Cap is 160.00 hours
- 5 hours per pay period regardless of years of service
- Cap is 1040 hours
There is no waiting period for holiday, vacation, and sick time, however; the
employee must have supervisor approval prior to using sick or vacation accruals.
Central Methodist University Tuition Waiver Scholarship: CMU offers a tuition waiver scholarship for undergraduate and graduate tuition charges for FT employees each term for online and on-ground courses held on the SFCC campus.
Spouse and dependent of FT SFCC employee may have undergraduate tuition charges (but not books, fees, or supplies) waived each term while attending CMU at SFCC.
Any spouse (but not dependent) of a FT SFCC employee shall have 50 percent of the graduate tuition charges (not books, fees, or supplies) waived each term while attending CMU at SFCC or online.
Employees may purchase LegalShield, which allows the ability to talk to an attorney on any matter without worrying about the high costs associated with legal counsel. LegalShield can be purchased for $7.48 per pay period for individual and $7.88 to add dependents.
