State Garden is looking for a Sanitation Supervisor to help oversee our Sanitation team! Located in Chelsea, MA, State Garden has been in the produce business for over 75 years and we are proud of the high quality products we sell. What started out as a family-run celery business has transformed into the company we are today – a top supplier of organic and conventional tender leaf greens, spinach and celery hearts.

The Sanitation Supervisor directs and oversees the activities of the nighttime Plant Sanitation Team. This includes sanitation duties and tasks related to the daily cleaning/sanitizing of various work environments/buildings, internal and external property, machinery, production equipment, production lines, tools, and parts. At times, this role requires a “hands-on” approach. Therefore, the supervisor must be able and willing to perform various hands-on sanitation duties and tasks while working alongside team members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be a culture advocate for food safety, human safety and continuous improvement; Drive the goal of Zero Food Safety incidents related to sanitation; Zero injuries; Continuous improvement.
  • Act as a role model for all sanitation team members; Provide hands-on leadership when necessary to support the broader team.
  • Receive and on-board new hires; Own the departmental on-boarding process; Plan and deploy development for each team member.
  • Ensure Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) is followed and fully completed; Work with Quality Assurance to ensure established levels of sanitation and cleanliness are met for all facilities.
  • Performs audits/inspections of the sanitized facility to ensure appropriate level of cleanliness.
  • Ensures team members are properly trained in the use of chemicals and procedures; Ensures team members follow all proper steps in the sanitation process.
  • Effectively communicate to the Director or Sanitation the need to augment/change the MSS as business changes, operations change, or deficiencies are identified; Work to eliminate a future sanitation failure.
  • Create and communicate weekly staffing schedule; Modify staffing schedule as necessary due to production plan changes.
  • Leads sanitation team member development; Coaches, mentors, and trains team members on new and existing training programs, procedures, policies, etc.
  • Enforces all Company policies and procedures with special emphasis on food safety, cGMPs, and human safety; Collaborates with Director of Sanitation and holds team members accountable for policy or procedural infractions, as well as poor behaviors.
  • Manages employee relations and the working relationship between The Company and team members.
  • Supports Director of Sanitation and the broader Quality Assurance team during inspections and audits; Is Flexible (shifts hours as needed) to attend and support on site audits (i.e., SQF, FDA, Customers, Government, etc.
  • Ensures appropriate company provided PPE and clothing is properly worn to safely complete various duties and tasks.
  • Assists to clean and sanitize equipment and production areas with water and chemicals to establish food safety standards.
  • Performs lock out tag out to isolate machinery energies in preparation of detail cleaning.
  • May disassemble machinery to clean and sanitize machine parts; May reassemble machine parts once cleaned and sanitized.
  • May perform various functions related to sanitation activities, especially when leading by example or assisting the training of other team members.
  • Performs pre-operational checks, examining manufacturing equipment and facilities to ensure proper sanitation; Works to ensure on-time post-sanitation start up.
  • Follows all OSHA safety guidelines that are required by the company. Actively works with on-duty safety supervisors to solve safety related concerns.
  • Supports special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position will work in unity with at least 1 additional supervisor. These supervisors oversee ~10 to ~14 group leads and ~40 sanitation employees (State Garden & Agency).

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in applicable areas (Food Science, Food Industry Compliance) and 1 year in a hands-on food manufacturing/processing environment preferred or 3 years of direct sanitation, quality, or production leadership experience in a food manufacturing/processing environment required.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience with the use of industrial food manufacturing cleaning chemicals; Knows how to read a Safety Data Sheet.
  • OSHA 10- or 30-hour training preferred; Exposure to some OSHA / Safety training required.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents (i.e., Safety Rules, Chemical Labels, Safety Data Sheets)
  • Strong planning and time management capabilities (Ability to stay ahead of the need).
  • Ability to lead and work in a team.
  • Knowledge of human and food safety, HACCP, and cGMPs
  • Prior experience with SQF or BRC is preferred.
  • Bilingual language skills highly preferred (Spanish, French or Creole).
