State Garden is looking for a Transportation Supervisor to join our Transportation department! Located in Chelsea, MA, State Garden has been in the produce business for over 75 years and we are proud of the high quality products we sell. What started out as a family-run celery business has transformed into the company we are today – a top supplier of organic and conventional tender leaf greens, spinach and celery hearts.
The Transportation/Traffic Manager is responsible for overseeing the transportation staff, day to day and regulatory activities related to the transportation department.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- A thorough understanding of MADOT and FMCSA regulations, promote safety initiatives, the ability to implement change and perform.
- Ensures inspection readiness for regulators (MADOT, FMCSA, OSHA etc.).
- Oversees and interacts with transportation vendors, brokers and independent trucking companies (including FL, LTL and special allocations).
- Oversees Yard Management contract services, including pricing and terms, repairs, invoice approvals, damage invoicing, etc.
- Directly and indirectly supervises and develops the transportation staff and truck drivers.
- Secures inbound raw product pickup from suppliers and delivery to ensure reliable product flow.
- Negotiates pricing and terms with service providers to ensure the most economical pricing with highest service.
- Monitors national freight boards and hires carriers to ensure transportation of inbound / outbound loads.
- Consistently monitors national, state and local freight trends to ensure freight costs are competitively maintained.
- Drives utilization of and is responsible for monitoring deliveries and maintaining accurate logs of all transportation and goods through use of the ERP system (i.e. monitors temperature, condition and on time deliveries, etc.).
- Actively inspects, identifies, communicates, and problem solves observations in the field including but not limited to personnel, equipment (i.e. tires, fuel, temperatures, etc.), and any other transportation activities or functions; Ensures identified issues in the field are resolved.
- Confirms completion of routine observations and audits. Ensures that drivers perform pre and post trip checks of equipment, and complete all work assignments in a safe, timely and efficient manner.
- Responsible for all scheduling of inbound and outbound logistics. Provides insight on the best practices to build and improve a transportation network for inbound, outbound, and returned shipments.
- Ability to problem solve, eliminate root causes to prevent recurrence; Focuses on continuous improvement.
- May use load boards to source better pricing and services for shipments.
- Proactively communicates service issues to internal and external customers. Explore and process freight claims, track and report on claims by carrier.
- Ensures facilities have necessary equipment for loading. Manages trailer pools.
- Guarantees documentation of shipping protocols meet all regulatory requirements as required under current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).
- Reports all maintenance and repair needs to transportation vehicles and equipment.
- Helps conduct investigations of all accidents and recommends corrective actions in collaboration with the HR department.
- Conducts regular meetings with managers and direct reports to review performance progress and goals.
- Promotes a culture of inclusivity and safety (food and human).
- Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This role shares responsibility in directly supervises 10-15 truck drivers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education and/or Experience:
- 5-10 years prior experience in logistics (both interstate and intrastate), preferably in a food manufacturing facility.
- Previous experience in warehouse shipping and receiving preferred, but not necessary.
- CDL A license preferred, but not necessary.
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics Management, Supply Chain Management, or related preferred.
- Bilingual preferred, but not necessary.
- Strong background in MA DOT, FMCSA, cGMP’s, OSHA and other regulatory requirements.
