This position is in the Alaska Vocational Technical Center Teacher's Unit (AVTECTA).

What You Will Be Doing:
Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC), a division of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, is recruiting for an AVTEC Instructor who will be responsible for planning, developing, and delivering instruction in the Industrial Electricity and Building Trades programs as an Industrial Electricity Instructor. Duties will include maintaining and developing program curriculum; designing, building, and maintaining the practical industry-based labs and shop areas; facilitating program advisory board meetings; and maintaining student training records.

The nature of the calendar year at AVTEC provides opportunity to travel to remote locations to bring training to Alaskans. Who We Are Looking For:
To be successful in the position a candidate will need the following core competencies:
  • Education and Training: Knowledge of teaching, training, making presentations, lecturing, assessing student learning and mastery of skills and other instructional methods. Applicants can expect to complete a demonstration of their abilities.
  • Oral Communication: Makes clear and convincing oral presentations. Listens effectively; clarifies information as needed. This will be evaluated during the interview and instructional demonstration.
  • Mechanics: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, benefits, repair, operation, and maintenance.
  • Administrative Tasks: Maintains accurate and up to date student records, provides written feedback to students regarding their progress, completes student records at the end to training and other administrative tasks usual to the position.
  • Technical Competence: Uses knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform one's job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job; advises others on technical issues.

Four years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable field.

OR SUBSTITUTION:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in the applicable field;
AND
Two years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable field;
AND
Two years professional experience developing, coordinating, and presenting adult training or vocational education programs.

OR SUBSTITUTION:
An industry recognized professional certification in the applicable field;
AND
Two years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable field;
AND
Two years professional experience developing, coordinating, and presenting adult training or vocational education programs.

Positions in the AVTEC Instructor job class require expertise in a particular vocational field such as the culinary arts, business or office technology, applied technology, information technology, maritime operations or safety, medical services, construction, or the trades. The required training or experience for each position is unique to the assigned field of instruction. Starting salary is dependent on qualifications and experience, State of Alaska policy, Location, and Collective Bargaining Agreement(s).
