The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Education Coordinator for the Goose Creek Correctional Center (GCCC) located in Mackenzie Point, Alaska.Watch Alaska DOC's video here: DOC Extended Cut.mp4 (vimeo.com)What You Will Be Doing: Teaching and assisting prisoners with educational pursuits to include ABE, GED, and ESL.Approving and helping with correspondence courses, including test proctoring.Developing, instructing, and reviewing lesson plans for programs in conjunction with the University of Alaska CIOS program.Counseling prisoners in areas of career development, education, and vocational training. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in education, counseling, social or behavior sciences or a closely related field;ANDOne year of journey level paraprofessional experience in educational or vocational education programs or services. This experience is equivalent to work such as the Vocational Rehabilitation Assistant 2 or Education Program Assistant, and similar classes with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent with another employer.Additional qualifying work experience may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.Special Note: An extensive background investigation will be required for successful applicants.Working with inmates requires care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk. Some positions perform activities that require bending, crouching, walking or standing for long periods of time. Some work activities involve discomfort or unpleasantness such as moderate noise levels, vibration, dust, dirt or odors associated with operation of equipment and/or tools in performance of duties.
