The Department of Education and Early Development is recruiting for an Education Specialist 2 to work in Anchorage of Juneau.

This position is in the Teacher Retirement System (TRS)

What you will be doing:

  • Ensure state and federal funds are granted to local education agencies.

  • Responsible for the implementation of special education services to students with disabilities and Alaska.

  • Interpret state and federal laws and regulations and recommend special education policies and procedures.

  • Monitor school district to ensure compliance with special education requirements.

  • Provides technical assistance and trainings to local education agencies Regarding fiscal and regulatory requirements, best practices, and program development

The Division of Innovation and Education Excellence is seeking an Education Specialist 2 to join the Special Education team that leads the work of supporting Alaska districts in Special Education related issues.

As a content specialist for DEED, this position works closely with districts and state education agencies to support best practice in special education and education pedagogy and to promote related career pathways to Alaska students.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is part of a small, high-functioning team. Our offices are conveniently located on the 9th floor of the State Office Building in downtown Juneau, or the 8th floor of the Atwood building in the heart of downtown Anchorage. Both Juneau and Anchorage locations have plentiful parking, are on the bus line, and within easy walking distance of multiple restaurants, coffee shops, and retail shopping.

The position has the opportunity for flexible scheduling and teleworking to promote work/life balance.

  • Administrative Law: Knowledge of state and Federal administrative laws, including procedures, regulations, Special Education guidelines, and precedents related to case preparation and settlements.

  • Change Management: Knowledge of change management principles, strategies, and techniques required for effectively planning, implementing, and evaluating change in the organization
Special Note: Driver License is desired.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college and four years of professional experience in education, one year of which was as a staff advisor/specialist, administrator, supervisor or consultant in planning, developing and maintaining standards and evaluating educational and vocational curricula or educational programs in a specialized field.

Substitution: Appropriate graduate study may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the non-specialized experience to a maximum of two years.

Special Note:
Due to the duties assigned to a majority of these positions, applicants may be required to possess an Alaska Teacher Certificate at the time of employment and be required to maintain certification as a condition of employment. Specific endorsements may also be required. Documentation is included in the file of affected positions.

Individual positions in this class may require expertise in a particular educational specialty. Recruitment and selection will be on the basis of these requirements.

Additional Required Information

  • A copy of education transcripts indicating the completed degree in special education or a directly related field.
  • A copy of the candidate’s professional teaching license that is current or evidence to support the license is currently being processed.
  • A copy of the candidate's special education certification or related service provider certification.
