Fishery Biologist 1 (Catch Monitor - PCN 111560)

What you will be doing:
This Fishery Biologist 1 (Catch Monitor) is an exciting entry level biologist position that provides experience in both research and management aspects of fisheries on the Yukon River: 

1. Incumbent receives and disseminates information from assessment projects and other monitoring projects which is quality checked and entered into an online database. 
2. Create internal and public information packets for distribution. 
3. Direct the daily work of a Fish and Wildlife Tech 2/3 and includes training of new employees, assisting with the hiring process, and helping to prioritize daily tasks in the office. 
4. Assists with the Lower Yukon Test Fish (LYTF) project, commercial catch and genetics sampling, scale collection and reading, field logistics, and may be asked to assist with the deployment and breakdown of the Emmonak field office and remote camps. 
5. Assist with data management projects and may assist with assembly of technical reports. Such projects may include historical data checks; compiling data tables; formatting tables, figures, and appendices for publication; drafting text sections for season summaries and reports, and other research and management projects as assigned. 
6. Assists the public with daily inquiries about fishery openings, fishery regulations, test fishery data, and permitting and registrations (through entities such as the Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission).

This unique position is an integral part of the research and management teams for the Chinook, summer chum (summer season), fall chum and coho salmon runs (fall season). It is expected that the successful applicant will gain a better overall understanding of the data needs to manage the commercial and subsistence fisheries on the Yukon River. The position may also have opportunities to further develop skills with report writing, data analysis, and sampling fish populations while developing and building knowledge and competencies in new areas.

The working environment you can expect:
The primary duty station will be in the ADF&G Anchorage office. There is the expectation that the incumbent will relocate to the Emmonak field office for approximately 3 months between late-May and early-September where workday length will vary depending on assigned duties. Room and board would be provided during field work. Emmonak is a relatively large village (approximately 900 people) with a health clinic, airport, two grocery stores, a fish processing plant, and a State Trooper post.

Who we are looking for:

• Experience working in fast-paced office environments which require frequent interaction with the public and agency staff while maintaining a positive demeanor through remote and in-person communication.
• Experience completing time sensitive data-entry, QA/QC, and summarization of results in a consistent and accurate manner. Specifically, experience producing reports and technical information materials using Microsoft Office products (including Excel, Word, and Outlook); proofreading technical documents; and report writing.
• Experience conducting work in remote parts of Alaska including field operations, field logistics, and training and/or supervision of employees in fishery sampling techniques, species ID, and data collection. 
• Experience in effective communication with crews collecting data in the field, and relaying information to a diverse audience including members of the public, as well as State, Federal, and Non-Governmental agencies.
• Experience working with databases and associated programs such as Microsoft Excel & Access and within the R coding language.

Special Note:
A valid driver's license is required.
Wildlife Safety training, Tactical Bear Safety training (required for firearm use), State of Alaska Notary, First-Aid/CPR training. Training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.

 

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

 

Special Note:

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

 

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

 

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy.
