The Division of Mining, Land & Water, Land Survey Section in the Anchorage office has an opening in the Statewide Platting and Water Boundaries Unit for Land Surveyor 2. Mission and Culture

The DNR DMLW mission is "To provide for the appropriate use and management of Alaska's state-owned land and water, aiming toward maximum use consistent with the public interest."

The Survey Section provides surveying services to manage and maximize the use of more than 100 million acres of state-owned land. Boundary disputes, easement vacations, subdivisions, and development of state land all require the professional services of the DNR Land Survey Section.

Core Responsibilities

This position, you will have the opportunity to provide professional surveying services for the Department of Natural Resources, Survey Section's Statewide Platting and Water Boundaries Unit primarily by preparing legal descriptions and tract maps for oil and gas lease sales, reviewing Quiet Title Actions, writing survey instructions and reviewing Plats for Alaska Tideland Surveys, determination of physical location of water boundaries in the field, emerged island reviews, and providing expert advice to the Attorney General`s Office, land surveyors and department staff on water boundary issues.

This position involves supervising and mentoring a team of two professionals, a licensed surveyor and a survey specialist, who are part of the Water Boundaries Team.

This position also supports the Land Survey Section's other Units as needed by writing survey instructions, reviewing Plats and As-Built Surveys, assisting on proposal evaluation committees, and researching special survey issues as they may arise. Occasionally, this position may have the opportunity to function as a crew member in the field on inspections, small projects, and trespass investigation surveys. Working knowledge of Geographic Information System databases is a must for this position.

The knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies needed to be successful in this position include :

• Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor
• Experience supervising and mentoring subordinate staff.
• Survey specialization in water boundary issues or the desire and initiative to learn the statutes, case law, and surveying principles related to water boundaries.
• Demonstrate proficiency with AutoCAD Civil3D, ArcGIS, and other common survey software.
• Demonstrate communication and technical writing skills, showing courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others. This may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed. Relate well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations. Be sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.
• Works with minimal supervision; self-starter; identifies and sets realistic goals.

Minimum Qualifications

Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in Alaska AND one year experience as a registered Land Surveyor.

Special Note :

Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor in Alaska is required for appointment to this job class. Applicants registered in another state may apply, but appointment is conditional upon receiving Alaskan registration as a Professional Land Surveyor. Registration may be allowed without examination to applicants holding registration in another state with similar requirements.
