The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for a Maintenance Generalist - Journey position at the Wildwood Correctional Center (WCC) located in Kenai, Alaska.

What You Will Be Doing:

Under general direction of the Maintenance Foreman, this position is responsible for a variety of exciting work which involves maintaining and repairing infrastructure of the Hiland Mountain Correctional Center in various areas such as: Plumbing; Electrical and Appliance Repairs; Interior and Exterior Structure Installation, Repair, and Maintenance; Grounds Maintenance and Snow Removal; and Vehicle Maintenance. The Maintenance Generalist duties include supervision of inmates and directing them to perform various repair projects throughout the facility such as: carpeting, floor tile, sheetrock, painting, installing wall fixtures, and relocating furniture. Tasks are approved and priorities set by the supervisor.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:
Wildwood Correctional Complex is a state adult correctional institution housing inmate of all custody levels, consisting of a Pretrial Facility housing 115 male and female inmates, a Sentenced Facility housing 264 male inmates and a Transitional Program housing 92 inmates. This position works in the Administration offices of Building 10 and will have limited exposure to the offender population.

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
  • Building and Construction: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings.
  • Carpentry/Woodworking: Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct, install, finish, or repair wooden objects or structures.
  • Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

This job class is part of a series of competency based class specifications created for career areas within the Labor, Trades, and Crafts Unit. The class specification identifies the levels of work and wage grades within the career area, the core and specific competencies of the career area, required work behaviors, certifications, and physical requirements. Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

PREA NOTIFICATION
The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS
Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.

FINGERPRINT NOTICE

DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT
