WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Do you enjoy traveling and seeing places that few people get to see? Have you ever wanted to fly around this beautiful state in a helicopter or use ATVs and snowmachines to access your field office during projects? Do you enjoy hiking in the Alaska Wilderness? If you answered yes to these questions, then this is the position for you. You will travel to many locations around the state installing, maintaining, and repairing public safety radio communications equipment. This will include tower climbing, generator maintenance, radio programming, and some landscaping to name a few tasks.

OUR ORGANIZATION, MISSION, AND CULTURE : Each technicians' role is equally important as we are a tight knit team working together to maintain a solid network for the men and women of Public Safety, DOT, and many other state agencies. The work done by the Alaska Public Safety Communication Services team brings tangible benefits to the people of Alaska and high job satisfaction.

THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT : (We are based out of a secure building with badge access, each technician has their own cubical and locker to store tools and gear. An average day starts with a morning team meeting followed by trip planning and prepping / updating information in our asset management system, completed with work in the lab or travel to sites addressing open work orders. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR : We are looking for someone who is comfortable working at heights up to 300' and willing and able to climb towers. Looking for someone who is willing to travel, sometimes back-to-back weeks depending on project and location. Someone who is self-motivated, follows direction, and is eager to learn.

Minimum Qualifications

Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments.

CERTIFICATIONS

Evidence of a certification (or equivalent) in any one of the following or similar related telecommunications certifications is necessary at the time of interview to demonstrate minimal competency for this PCN to be compensated at the Specialist level. Other certifications listed below may additionally be required later during employment :

  • Associate Certified Electronics Technician
  • General Communications Technician - Level 2
  • BICSI Cabling Installer
  • Vendor Specific Technician Certification
  • Refrigeration and Heat Technology Certification
  • State of Alaska Certificate of Electrical Fitness, Journeyman
  • Associate Degree - Electronics or related field
  • General Radiotelephone Operator License
  • Tower Climber / Rescue Certification
  • Information Technology Certification (e.g. Cisco CCNA / CCNP, A , Net )

If certification is not currently possessed, candidate will receive a conditional job offer requiring individual to obtain and provide evidence of certification no later than COB on the last day of the probationary period. Failure to provide evidence of the required certification prior to probationary period end will be considered basis for non-retention in the position.

Employment with Alaska Public Safety Communication Services is contingent upon successfully completing and maintaining an APSIN background check and security clearance conducted by the Department of Public Safety. Fingerprinting is required.

Valid Driver`s License is required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Additional Information for this position :

  • AK Driver's License is required
  • Thie position requires frequent travel that will occasionally include weekend travel.
  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • This position requires passing the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN), which includes a background investigation requiring finger printing.
  • Must be able / willing to fly in small aircraft to include helicopters.
  • BACKGROUND CHECK

    This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.

    CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.

    EDUCATION
