Job Description

  • The Department of Corrections is currently offering a hire incentive bonus of up to $15,000.00 to newly hired Mental Health Clinician 3. The incentive bonus will be paid in two equal installments, minus mandatory deductions. The first installment will be paid 90 calendar days after the first day of employment, and upon demonstrating an overall mid-acceptable performance rating. The second and final installment will be paid upon the employee's successful completion of the probationary period. Payments will be due within sixty (60) calendar days of such request. To receive an incentive, employees are expected to agree to a three-year term of employment with the Department of Corrections.

The Department of Corrections, Division of Health & Rehabilitation Services, is recruiting for a Mental Health Clinician 3 position at the Anchorage Correctional Complex (ACC) located in Anchorage, Alaska.

What you will be doing :

Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief Mental Health Officer, this position will :

  • Act as the lead clinician for mental health services at the Anchorage Correctional Center and work in conjunction with the other Mental Health Clinician 3s to coordinate services.
  • Develop and oversee the day-to-day programming and management of the subacute unit, including clinical and administrative supervision of mental health staff.
  • Conduct diagnostic screening of referred inmates with high probability of psychological problems through the evaluation of existing history, prior psychological testing, clinical observations and direct interviews.
  • Conduct multi-diagnostic mental status examinations and triage acuity levels of high-risk psychiatric patients including those with a wide variety of diagnoses such as chronic mental illness, behavior / characterological disorders, organic impairments, alcohol / drug disorders, and developmental disabilities.
  • Respond to crisis referrals from staff and makes appropriate recommendations and / or provides treatment for mentally ill inmates, suicidal inmates, as well as inmates with extreme behavior problems.

    This position is located at the Anchorage Correctional Complex, a secure facility for incarcerated offenders. This position will work closely with a team of correctional officers, mental health clinicians, psychiatric providers, and medical staff.

    Progressively responsible" means indicating growth and / or advancement in complexity, difficulty, or level of responsibility.

    Professional experience" means work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the power or right to decide or act according to one's own judgment.

    Training" and "education" in this guidance are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.

    Typically gained by" means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.
