Job Description
The Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (AOGCC) is currently recruiting for a permanent, full-time overtime ineligible Petroleum Geologist.
Under general direction, the Petroleum Geologist reviews applications for permits to drill, sundry approvals, spacing exceptions, pool rules and area injection orders to ensure compliance with State statutes and regulations; attend public hearings and provide geological advice to the Commissioners; provide recommendations for proposed Commission orders and decisions, and prepares draft text and illustrations for those orders and decisions; prepares drafts of proposed regulations and Commission policies; participates in investigations and recommend corrective actions to address waste issues or unsafe practices; and reviews operations summaries and reports
Review operations summaries and reports. in the enforcement of Oil and Gas Conservation statutes and regulations to assure the prevention of waste in the exploration, development and production of hydrocarbon reservoirs.
The Petroleum Geologist must evaluate and analyze non-repetitive conditions and exercise independent judgment in the application of regulatory decisions affecting continued operations.

The AOGCC is an independent, quasi-judicial agency of the State of Alaska. The AOGCC oversees all oil and gas drilling, development and production, reservoir depletion and metering operations in the state of Alaska. The AOGCC is responsible for preventing waste, protecting correlative rights, improving ultimate recovery, and protecting underground freshwater. It administers the Underground Injection Control (UIC) program for enhanced oil recovery and underground disposal of oil field waste in Alaska. The AOGCC serves as an adjudicatory forum for resolving certain oil and gas disputes between owners, including the State. The AOGCC carries out statutory mandates consistent with the protection of health, safety and the environment. It strives for cooperation with industry, while maintaining well-defined and essential regulatory requirements.

The AOGCC office is located in Downtown Anchorage near the Park Strip, in a single-story building with plenty of free, private parking available. This position provides excellent customer service to a variety of state agencies, members of the public and industry.
The successful candidate will need:
- Working knowledge of oil and gas operations in Alaska.
- Working knowledge of North Slope and Cook Inlet subsurface geology.
- Working knowledge of well logs and geological attributes affecting reservoir performance.
- Working knowledge of AOGCC statutes and regulations.
- The ability to exercise independent judgement and prioritize work responsibilities with minimal oversight.
- The ability to effectively and professionally communicate with others, both verbally and in writing.
Special Notice:
This position is in the exempt service. The exempt service is established by statute. Positions are exempt from the provisions of the State Personnel Act and serves at the discretion of the appointing authority. This position is not covered by the terms of a collective bargaining agreement.
Minimum Qualifications
Desired Qualifications: A Master's degree in geology and 5 years of professional level experience in petroleum exploration and development geology preferable or a Bachelor's degree in geology and 10 years of professional level experience in petroleum exploration and development geology.
