The Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development, Division of Office of the Commissioner is recruiting for a Special Assistant to the Commissioner 2 located in Anchorage!
What you will be doing:
Working as a Special Assistant to the Commissioner 2 you will act at the direction of the Commissioner and on behalf of the Commissioner. This position serves as the department’s Public Information Officer (PIO) and manages the voice and brand of the Department, ensuring all communication materials adhere to the department standards. This position also manages special projects and prepares briefings on various subjects for the Commissioner. In this position you will:
- Serve as the department spokesperson for all media inquiries, ensuring they are responded to in a timely manner
- Draft, edit, and publish all department press releases and op-eds, working with program staff when appropriate for technical information
- Coordinate any media briefings, press conferences, or media opportunities that involve the department
- Compile, draft, and disperse the department’s quarterly newsletter
- Manage the department’s social media presence
- Draft and implement department communication plans
- Draft talking points/presentation on behalf of the Commissioner
- Monitor news cycles for stories impacting the department
- Review and approve public speaking opportunities department-wide
- As directed, act on the Commissioner’s behalf as liaison with departmental units and outside agencies to coordinate the collection and distribution of information
- Represent the Commissioner in a variety of sensitive areas and serve on commissions, boards, and committees when delegated to do so
- Complete assignments at the direction of the Commissioner, including representing the Department in situations that may be difficult or divisive, maintaining a high degree of professionalism
- Initiate, conduct, or lead in-depth management projects and studies to assist in executive level decision-making and management processes
- Participate in department strategy and decision-making meetings that may include the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, and Division Directors.

Positions in this job class are in the partially exempt service in accordance with AS 39.25.120(c)(6).
