State Metrologist 1

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Measurement Standards & Commercial Vehicle Compliance is looking for a Metrologist 1 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What you will be doing:

You will be performing basic calibrations of mass, volume, frequency, and temperature standards providing metrological traceability through the National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST) to the International System of Units (SI). The State Metrologist 1 assists the Sate Metrologist 2 by performing laboratory calibrations, routine laboratory functions, and maintenance of laboratory data files and calibration documentation.

The working environment you can expect:

The State of Alaska Metrology Laboratory is located in the Huffman business park in south Anchorage. The majority of your time will be spent in a temperature and humidity-controlled precision measurement laboratory. Travel required one to three times per year in and out of the State of Alaska for training and to perform calibrations.

Who we are looking for:

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of:

• Arithmetic/Mathematical Reasoning: Performs computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division correctly; solves practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques.

• Standards: Knowledge of standards that either are compliant with or derived from established standards or guidelines.

• Technical Credibility: Understands and appropriately applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized expertise.

• Quality Assurance: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools of quality assurance and quality control used to ensure a product fulfills functional requirements and standards.

DRIVER’S LICENSE REQUIREMENT

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of journey level experience performing inspections of weighing and measuring devices and packaged commodities for sale. This experience is equivalent to Weights and Measures Inspector 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
One year of journey level experience performing accuracy calibrations, testing of weighing and measuring devices or other precision instruments in a laboratory.

Substitution:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a major in metrology, measurement science, physics, electronics, mathematics, or a closely related field may substitute for half of the required experience.

Special Note:
As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to successfully complete the training necessary for recognition as an Approved Signatory by the Office of Weights and Measures, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Department of Commerce.

Note: Duties may require the ability to lift and carry 50-pound weights and 5-gallon test measures frequently.
