What are the responsibilities and job description for the Station Agent - Talkeetna (Alaska Railroad) position at State of Alaska?
Please note that this is a seasonal part-time position and will start in April 2025.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To perform duties at the Passenger Depot related to serving the public with baggage-related issues including customer service, loading /unloading baggage and janitorial duties, as well as small maintenance and landscaping duties. To operate a complex and comprehensive computerized reservation system to place reservations, sell and issue passenger tickets, make travel reservations, provide passenger rail and tour information, and coordinate boarding activities.Duties and Responsibilities: |
Performs baggage handling duties of loading/unloading and delivering baggage to and from trains using a forklift. Operates government vehicles (sedans, pickup trucks, etc.) requiring a valid driver’s license. Provides service to the public by answering inquiries regarding the Railroad’s passenger, baggage, and related information, i.e. excessive baggage rates, events, activities, and other information of local interest. Acts as source of information on other modes of transportation such as cabs, buses, etc. |
Provides customer service by greeting customers, answering questions, and assisting with travel plans. Coordinates individual bookings by determining travel dates and destination. Makes travel reservations using a computerized reservation system. Collects payment for reservations (cash, credit card or tour operator voucher). Issues refund when appropriate. Prints and issues boarding passes. Prepares conductor’s manifest and notification of seat assignments. |
Responsible for all general janitorial and housekeeping needs of depot, may include small maintenance of building and grounds. Ensures the property is clean and in an orderly condition. |
Conducts problem resolution regarding lost or damaged bags. Documents problems that are not able to be resolved. Works with Lost and Found group on the personal lost and found items onboard trains and stations. |
Contributes to team effort by accomplishing Guest Services-related results as needed. |
Factor 1 – Skill and Knowledge
High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. Six months of verifiable front-line customer service experience is required. One year of experience in the travel or tourism industry is preferred. Skill to operate a computerized reservation system is preferred. Skill and ability to deal tactfully with the public is required. Must have the skill and ability to keep inventory control of passenger tickets and revenue baggage checks. Basic knowledge of accounting procedures to handle money, make change, and reconcile total cash balance daily is required. Knowledge of passenger and baggage tariffs, various forms of allowable payment for tickets, railroad services, schedules, baggage allowances, rules and regulations of the department is preferred. Previous experience operating a forklift is preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Factor 2 - Responsibility
Incumbent is responsible for maintaining a clean and orderly station and grounds, safeguarding monies and ticket stock, and ensuring the station’s security during performance of duties. Incumbent must reconcile cash balance on a daily basis and submit report to the Accounting Manager, Passenger Services, Anchorage. Uses own judgment in resolving passenger problems, complaints and routine problems of day-to-day operation of station. Safely operates forklift to load/unload and deliver baggage to and from trains.
Work is performed under the general direction of the Manager, Passenger Depot Services, Manager, Northend Guest Services and/or Passenger Operations Supervisor, Seward, Uses own judgment in planning and carrying out work assignments. Set priorities in accordance with workload and established instructions, policy, and procedures.
Factor 3 - Physical Effort
Work requires physical exertion, lifting /carrying baggage, bending, stooping, etc. in performance of day-to-day duties and general housekeeping of station and grounds. When operating the forklift, moderate physical effort is used in operating the controls, driving, and loading/unloading baggage varying from 40-100 pounds.
Factor 4 - Working Conditions
Incumbent is required to work inside and outside of the depot in current weather conditions. Work involves exposure to moderate risks and discomforts, i.e., dust, dirt, and working around moving trains/vehicles, which require special safety precautions.

Basic knowledge of accounting procedures to handle money, make change, and balance revenue and reports is required. Ability to operate a computerized reservation system is preferred. Must be people oriented and have excellent communication skills. Must be able to use judgment in problem solving situations. Knowledge of Railroad terminology, passenger and baggage tariffs, services, schedules, and ticketing procedures is preferred. Previous experience operating a forklift is preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
