The Department of Administration, Office of Information Technology is recruiting for a Systems Programmer 1 or 2 in Juneau
It is recommended that you apply for both levels if you are qualified.

  • Technology Awareness: Knowledge of developments and new applications of information technology (hardware, software, telecommunications), emerging technologies and their applications to business processes, and applications and implementation of information systems to meet organizational requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:

  • Hardware: Knowledge of specifications, uses, and types of computer or computer-related equipment.
  • Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software.
  • Operating Systems: Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications.
  • Systems Integration: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Training in computer science, information technology, or system administration – or a similar field or professional experience – that provided knowledge of systems, networking software, hardware, protocols, and scripting/automation tools.

Special Note: 
“Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.

“Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.

“Training” means the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.
 
“Professional experience” means work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the power or right to decide or act according to one's own judgment.

Special Note:
  • Employment with Office of Information Technology Division is contingent upon successfully completing and maintaining a background check and security clearance conducted by the Department of Public Safety. Fingerprinting is required (per SOA ISP-131).

  • Authority: US Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Justice Information Systems (FBI-CJIS); Alaska Statute (AS) 44.21 et. Seq., the Department of Administration is assigned responsibility for statewide Executive Branch automated data processing and telecommunication support; Information Security Policy (ISP) 131 Personnel Security.


FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate’s credibly possessed and proven competencies. If hired at the lower level, you will be promoted to the higher level after completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work.
