Ahoy there, maritime maestros! We're on the lookout for a fearless and skilled Vessel Construction Manager 3 to join our crew in Ketchikan, where the mountains meet the sea and the wild Alaskan spirit runs deep. As the conductor of our nautical symphony, you'll be orchestrating the construction of vessels that'll brave the untamed waters of the Last Frontier. What you will be doing:

As a Vessel Construction Manager 3 for the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), you will lead and oversee complex vessel design, engineering, and construction projects, ensuring high standards of quality, timeliness, and cost-efficiency. You will manage large-scale projects involving new ship construction and refurbishment, coordinating with marine engineers, naval architects, consultants, and contractors. Your role includes contract administration, regulatory compliance with Federal Highway Administration provisions, and financial management. You will supervise staff, conduct detailed project analyses, prepare cost estimates, and ensure adherence to schedules. Additionally, you will liaise with federal, state, and local officials, present projects to community groups, and travel extensively to project sites to monitor progress and make critical decisions regarding project execution. Your expertise will support the development of the Marine Highways portion of the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and the AMHS Obligation Plan to utilize Federal Participating Funds.

  • Vessel Construction:  Knowledge of design, construction, and maintenance of offshore vessels, including electrical and propulsion systems, hydrodynamics, stability, and structural integrity, understanding of materials used in marine construction (e.g., steel, composites, coatings) and selecting materials based on durability, corrosion resistance, and weight considerations, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or progressively responsible professional level experience in marine engineering, naval architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, naval science, sailing as a licensed 1st Assistant Engineer or Chief Engineer and/or administering contracts for the construction of marine vessel structures at commercial or government shipyards; marine engineering and project management duties selecting and applying accepted and standard marine engineering practices associated with the design, construction, refurbishment and maintenance of ships and ship systems.
