Job Summary

The Division of Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Paralegal. This position serves as a high level legal assistant offering paralegal services to a staff of eight attorneys.

This is a hybrid position with the expectation of being in the office three days per week. The position may offer the ability to work remotely within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete special projects as assigned, and assist attorneys with a wide ranging array of administrative support functions.
  • Prepare and draft legal memoranda, briefs, pleadings, Directors Decisions, opinions, legal correspondence and reports and other documents as requested by attorneys
  • Compile, annotate, and index provisions of statutes, cases and administrative decisions
  • Conduct legal research and legal research projects, research and investigate complex cases.
  • Assist attorneys in preparing cases for various kinds of legal actions and secure evidence and documentation; assist attorneys in managing dockets, including tracking deadlines and project milestones; provide courtroom support to trial attorneys during hearings, trials, etc.
  • Process and respond to subpoenas and public records requests.
  • Assist with trust reviews.
  • Assist with implementation of any new and upcoming federal and state statutes, regulations and rules.
  • Assist with Agency-wide HIPAA auditing and compliance.

Knowledge Of

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Concepts, medical and legal terminology, principles and procedures of federal and state law.
  • Methods and techniques for writing briefs, opinions, reports, and other documents in established formats.
  • Rules, regulations and policies governing the grievance and appeals process.
  • AHCCCS program, the interrelationship between AHCCCS divisions, and agency administrative policies and procedures.
  • Arizona and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, the basic legislative process, and Westlaw and/or Lexis.

Skill In

  • Extracting and utilizing information in statutes, court decisions, legal documents and records.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including skill in writing legal documents.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with the public and external entities.
  • Computer skills including the use of MS Office software, ProLaw database, PMMIS mainframe system; and office hardware such as faxes, printers, copiers and phone systems.
  • Customer service and discretionary skills in dealing with difficult, confused and frustrated clientele.
  • Exceptional organizational skills; office administration, including but not limited to prioritizing and multi-tasking.

Ability To

  • Extract and use information from statutes, court decisions, legal documents and related records.
  • Interview and elicit information in legal investigations; write legal documents/reports.
  • Establish and maintain work relationships with representatives of the courts and federal, state and local government agencies.
  • Apply work management principles and techniques: plan, prioritize and manage time, multi-task, communicate effectively.
  • Work independently and maintain confidentiality.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relations with division and agency staff.

Qualifications

Current Arizona Driver's License.

Minimum

  • One to three years experience working in a legal environment.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or a closely related field, and a paralegal certificate.
  • Acceptable paralegal certifications include an ALP, PLS, CLP or PP from a NALS or CP or AP from NALA.
