Job Summary:
This position will work in the Soils & Aggregate lab and report to the Soils Lab supervisor. This position performs laboratory tests on soils and aggregate samples to ensure that materials used in state construction projects comply with specifications and/or provide preliminary engineering data to the geotechnical section. Responsible for the timely and accurate completion of assigned projects, including complete documentation of all phases of each assignment. Ensures proper use, operation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of assigned equipment. May assist other laboratories as needed.
Job Duties:
Perform laboratory testing on soils, aggregates, asphalt binder, concrete, and steel.
Enter laboratory data on test cards and into the computer daily. Perform mathematical computation.
Perform and assist with minor calibration on laboratory equipment. Perform, document, and record routine maintenance of the laboratory equipment.
Earn and maintain all required training and certifications. Train/mentor new employees. May be required to drive a State vehicle.
Other duties as assigned as related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
- ADOT's Construction and Materials Testing and Acceptance Standards.
- American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and Arizona Test Methods.
- Soils and aggregates characteristics and physical properties.
Skills:
- Mathematics and computation.
- Laboratory sample preparation and testing.
- Database software such as FAST.
- Various computer programs such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
Ability:
- Mentor and train other employees.
- Multitask and keep track of different tests happening at the same time.
Selective Preference(s):
A current ATTI certification in Soil and Asphalt. A strong background in laboratory sciences and testing of soils and aggregates. Education in advanced mathematics or algebra.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Soils certification must be obtained with 18 months of hire.
Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Asphalt certification must be obtained with 18 months of hire.
