Environmental Services Intern - North Coast Redwoods District

The reporting location for Environmental Services Intern (ESI) will be Fort Humboldt State Historical Park . Duties will necessitate travel throughout the District, mainly in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park and in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

Under the supervisions of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) the ESI position will support the District Resource Management Program by assisting with the implementation of resource restoration projects : Following the district protocols, applicants will assist with botanical surveys, revegetation, and vegetation monitoring. Individuals may also assist with invasive species management, succession management, habitat restoration, and prescribed fire implementation and monitoring.

APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALITIES : Have thorough knowledge of coastal northern California flora and vegetation types, be able to identify plant species, use dichotomous keys and maintain field notes. Possess excellent field navigation skills, and familiarity with handheld GPS data collection devices (AGOL / FieldMaps). Work well as an individual and in a multi-disciplinary team setting. Be flexible and open-minded and be able to work under adverse weather conditions. Perform some minor strenuous labor (e.g. carrying up to 45 lbs) and navigate and hike two to five miles in coastal and forested environments. This will include working in steep terrain, navigating through areas of thick brush, through standing and fallen timber.

The position may occasionally require overnight camping for up to 3 nights per week. Individual will have to operate 4-wheel drive trucks and ATV's (ATV certified preferred).

This position is designated as not telework eligible .

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position requires a valid Class C driver's license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver's license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver's license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and / or restrictions on your application.

The Environmental Services Intern classification is a non-testing classification. Appointments to this class are made under temporary authority (TAU) and are limited to no more than nine months of full-time equivalent work. No permanent appointments will be made. The time a person can serve in a temporary appointment must not exceed 9 months in 12-consecutive months or 189 days of work. When serving in a TAU appointment, the incumbent does not acquire probationary or permanent status or rights.
