Description of Job
This Communications Branch exists to provide a professional public safety communications service for the Colorado State Patrol, other partner agencies, and the public. The communications services includes researching and disseminating routine, emergency and criminal justice information, dispatching, and when required, providing 911 and emergency medical dispatch services.
Work Environment
- 100% in-person position
- 24/7 operations including nights, weekends and holidays
- Shifts vary based on demands and needs of the unit. This position includes additional compensation in the form of shift differentials which include:
- 20% Weekend shifts
- 7.5% Swing shift (starts after 11AM)
- 14% Grave shift (starts after 6PM)
- The Communication Officer training program is approximately 20 weeks. The training schedule is Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Police Communication Technician
Key Responsibilities
- Receive incoming telephone or alarm system calls regarding emergency and non-emergency police and fire service, emergency ambulance service, information and after hours calls for departments within a city.
- Determine response requirements and relative priorities of situations, and dispatch units in accordance with established procedures.
- Operate the Incident Command/Integrated Command Systems (ICS) in order to record details of calls, dispatches, and messages.
- Relay information and messages to and from emergency sites, to law enforcement agencies, and to all other individuals or groups requiring notification.
- Utilize Computer Aided Dispatch System, and contact emergency response field units to determine emergency units available for dispatch.
- Receive and disseminate all requests for emergency services such as 911 calls, suicide, homicide, assaults, domestic disputes, drunk drivers, reports of road rage, motor vehicle accidents, motorists in need of assistance.
- Operate designated camera systems, operate radio consoles, and computer terminals to receive, record, and transmit police and other emergency services communication.
- Interview callers’ request for emergency services, comprehend, analyze and determine the appropriate level of response.

Preferred Qualifications and Competencies
Highly preferred to have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. and type approximately 35 words per minute.
- Bilingual skills include reading, writing, and speaking fluently in Spanish, Russian, or other languages.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires successful completion of a background investigation that includes polygraph examination, medical physical, psychological examination, and drug screen. If you have used marijuana within the last 12 months or any other illegal drug within the last three years, may be disqualified.
- The background investigation is based on the following criteria, including but not limited to driving history, criminal behavior/history, alcohol use/behavior, drug use/behavior, and integrity. If you omit any material fact on your application, testing materials, or during the background interview or polygraph, you may be disqualified. To be disqualified upon admission or confirmation of:

- Any illegal use, purchase, distribution, or manufacture of a controlled schedule I, II, or III drugs (as defined in C.R.S. 18-18-102) within the last 5 years.
- Use of any illegal drug, on or off duty, while employed as a law enforcement officer.
- Refusal to agree to submit to previous employers drug screening or drug testing as an employee within the past 5 years

Alcohol Behavior
To be disqualified upon admission or confirmation of:
- Unauthorized consumption of an alcoholic beverage while on "patrol" as a law enforcement officer.
- Refusal to agree to submit to a previous employer alcohol testing as an employee within the past 5 years
To be considered under the totality of circumstances for disqualification by the appointing authority based on the circumstances and information.
- Unauthorized consumption of an alcoholic beverage while on "duty" as a law enforcement officer.
- Consideration is given to the circumstances and frequency of consumption during attendance at conferences or events.
Criminal Behavior

- Any DUI, DWAI, DUID conviction within the past 3 years
- Any license suspension/revocation within the last 2 years not including FRA suspension.
- Any hit and run accident with damage to another party or injury, within the last 3 years whether reported or not.
- Any incident of eluding or attempting to elude an emergency vehicle within the last 3 years whether charged or not.
To be considered under the totality of circumstances for disqualification by the appointing authority based on the circumstances and information.
- Any license suspension/revocation within the last 5 years including FRA suspension.
- The circumstances and frequency of incident of a crime against a person, whether caught or not within the past 3 years.
- The circumstances and frequency of 3 or more convictions of moving traffic violations within the past 12 months and/or 5 or more convictions of moving traffic violations within the past 5 years (speeding, turning violations, following too closely, signaling violations, lane violations, right of way, etc.)
