Job Location: Sterling Correctional Facility: Sterling, Colorado 


The position provides entry-level marketable job skills to inmate students within an adult educational correctional system/facility by delivering instruction, training and assessments in Customer Service curriculum in accordance with the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) and/or the Colorado State Licensing Board (if applicable). 
 
Job Duties Include: 
  • Teach and mentor inmate students individually or in large and small group classrooms promoting occupational, academic and transitional performance skills;
  • Determine educational needs of inmate students to develop short and long term goals;
  • Plan course content and develop methods of instruction;
  • Develop and implement competency-based teaching aids such as instructional software, multimedia visual aids, or study materials;
  • Lecture on theories, concepts and terminology of customer service;
  • Select and administer appropriate performance assessments to inmate students in order to measure progress, course completion requirements, and to evaluate training/testing effectiveness;
  • Ensure security, safety, supervision and monitoring of inmate students in the proper use, storage and inventory of equipment tools, keys and hazardous materials in accordance with CDOC regulations;
  • Prepare reports and maintain records such as student grades, attendance rosters, and training activity details;
  • Observe and evaluate inmate students' work to determine progress, provide feedback, and make suggestions for improvement;
  • Document inmate achievements, competencies and contact hours towards completion of certificate requirements;
  • Provide oversight and coordination of Computer Based Testing lab and record security to include test proctoring of all computer based testing;
  • Justify accuracy and usage of budget requests;
  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field, and integrates relevant information into training programs;
  • Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with fellow teachers in a cooperative effort to promote mutual and continued guidance and improvements;
  • Actively contribute to the *safety and security of the facility through effective inmate management and promoting conflict resolution and solutions;
  • Endorse and adhere to the CDOC Mission and Vision promoting commitment and integrity;
  • Maintain Colorado Community College credential;
  • Other duties as assigned. 
 
*Safety & Security - position maintains safety and security by training inmates and occasionally or in an emergent situation perform inmate counts, shakedowns, searches, escorts, movement control, and inmate access to classrooms. Through conscientious observation and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations and the Code of Penal Discipline, the position promotes a safe and secure work environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in business, customer service or a related field    ---AND---    the applicant must have completed 4,000 hours of *verifiable occupational experience in a customer service industry related to the credential area within the last seven (7) years as per the requirements of the Colorado Community College System (CCCS).

There is no substitution for the completed 4,000 hours as referenced above. 

*Verifiable occupational experience includes occupations in the service industry to include, but not limited to: positions where the individual interfaces directly with clients/customers to provide services, resolve problems, connect people, and support positive experiences with a business. Examples include, but are not limited to: retail, front desk service, hospitality/host service, servers, banking, phone support, counseling, and/or advising.

Experience MUST be described in detail on your application to receive credit.

SUBSTITUTION #1:

In lieu of an Associate's Degree in a business/customer service industry or related field of study, applicant must possess a current State of Colorado, national, industry, military, or union license/certification as appropriate for a business/customer service industry skill or related trade area   ---AND---    the applicant must have completed 4,000 hours verifiable occupational experience in a business/customer service industry related to the credential area within the last seven (7) years as per the requirements of the Colorado Community College System (CCCS).

There is no substitution for the completed 4,000 hours as referenced above.

Experience MUST be described in detail on your application to receive credit.

Employment history is calculated on a full-time basis (40 hours per week). Part-time employment is calculated on a prorated basis to determine qualifications. Please be sure your application specifically addresses your qualifications, experience, work products, and accomplishments as they relate to the position and minimum requirements.

Conditions of employment after meeting the minimum qualifications:
  • Must possess or obtain a CCCS post-secondary credential in the customer service field in compliance with the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) within six (6) months of date of hire.  
  • Must obtain a Colorado Community College Professional Teacher Credential within three (3) years of date of hire.
  • Must maintain a Colorado Community College Initial/Professional Teacher Credential through the duration of employment.
 
A copy of your college transcripts MUST be attached to this application in order to receive college course work credit. Transcripts must include your name, name of the institution, degree, date conferred, and be in pdf or jpg format.

Transcripts from colleges or universities outside the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service.

Out of State Applicants Minimum Qualifications:
If hired, you will be required to complete the necessary steps to obtain your Career and Technical Education credential through the Prison Programs office for the Colorado Department of Corrections. This will require that you be able to provide evidence of degrees through transcript, copies of industry certification, and relevant work experience documentation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Business or a Customer Service related field;
  • CCCS Credential in Business;
  • Experience teaching or training adults;
  • Experience teaching or training Customer Service;
  • Experience teaching or training in a correctional environment;
  • Experience with test proctoring.

Employees who are rehired or reinstated within six months of their separation will return at either their previous pay rate if hired into the same class level or based on their time in the class series, whichever is higher. Those rehired or reinstated after six months' separation will be calculated using the same formula for new hires and promotions.

  • Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States to be appointed to this position. CDOC uses e-Verify, an Internet-based system, to confirm the eligibility of all newly hired employees to work in the United States. CDOC does not sponsor non-residents of the United States.

  • Successfully pass all modules of the six-week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;

    • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

    • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

    • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;

    • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

    • Swing a baton in a striking technique;

    • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

    • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;

  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;

  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;

  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

  • Willing and able to travel;

  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;

  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;

  • Employees may be required to submit to regular serial testing and reporting for COVID-19.

 

Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.

The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. Employees (see exception below) may use marijuana in their personal time but are prohibited from working while under the influence of any substance, including marijuana. A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass.  Random drug screening will occur throughout employment. 

Exception: Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified employees are prohibited from the use of marijuana. Health care professionals must check their licensing requirements regarding marijuana use.
