This position is only open to Colorado state residents.


New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Work Unit

This unit at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) works to maintain, preserve, and improve the functional integrity and efficiency of the Highway
Transportation System through the Region-wide planning, administration, management, monitoring, and enforcement of Federal Guidelines, State Statutes, State Rules and Regulations, and the design and operation of traffic control devices. The unit administers transportation design contracts within Region 1 and oversees the
consultants performing the work for traffic engineering, traffic operations, and permit-related functions. The unit also oversees and manages local agency project design, clearance coordination, advertisement, and construction.


About the Position

This position is part of the Region 1's  Traffic and Safety Work Unit located in Denver, CO. The position will investigate investigate traffic operations problems, communicate with the public, and provide clarification/explanation to citizens' traffic-related issues and questions. The position will provide information pertaining to traffic operations to Design Units. Under the guidance of a professional engineer, the position analyzes, evaluates, and designs professional traffic engineering plans.  


Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop traffic engineering and construction traffic control plans from beginning to end, utilizing traffic engineering fundamentals, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Standard Specifications, M&S Standards and other accepted procedures.  Uses computer systems and software to produce contract plan documents;
  • Analyze and evaluate complex design and construction staging plans to formulate effective traffic engineering strategies.  Predict traffic operation, motorist perception/reaction based on observation, experience and engineering judgment;
  • Analyze and evaluate Department construction projects developed by consultant engineers to ensure compliance with feasibility and safety issues and using engineering theories and strategies;
  • Attend various meetings including scoping, FIR, FOR, construction phasing, and constructability meetings to ensure accuracy, consistency and completeness of the entire project plan as it relates to traffic;
  • Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
  • Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
  • Travel required during work hours throughout the Region
  • Occasional overnight travel throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors; you must include your Colorado EIT number on your online application as verification of your registration. 
  • AND at least one (1) year of professional civil or geotechnical engineering work experience related to transportation.
OR

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer issued by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.  
  • You must include your Colorado PE License number on your online application as verification of your registration.

  • Required to obtain your registration as a licensed Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board or Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of hire.

  • Knowledge and experience with engineering pavement design.
  • Knowledge and experience with CDOT's Pavement Design Manual, CDOT Field Materials Manual, CDOT Laboratory Manual, AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, Highway Capacity Manual, A Policy on Geometric Design of Highway and Streets, CDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, and CDOT M&S Standard Plans. 
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments.

  • Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner.

  • Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with sensitivity to their needs, priorities, promises made and commitments.

  • Effective interpersonal and relationship-building skills.

  • Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability.

  • Excellent reasoning, investigative, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Excellent facilitation, presentation, and communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Fluency in MS Word, MS Excel, Gmail, Google Applications, SAP, AASHTO PMED, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
