The Lock Shop/Access Services team at the Colorado School of Mines operates in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, ensuring the security and accessibility of campus facilities while prioritizing customer service. The Lock Shop Supervisor (Structural Trades III) is a leadership role overseeing a dedicated team responsible for managing locks, keys, and electronic access control systems and the structural trades responsibilities (non-licensed trades) across a campus spanning over 2.4 million square feet.

This position is an opportunity for a motivated leader who thrives in mentorship, team development, and customer service. The Supervisor fosters a positive and professional work environment, ensuring efficiency, accountability, and high-quality service delivery. The role also includes oversight of some structural trades personnel, responsible for tasks such as drywall repair, carpentry, painting, doors, windows, and minor building repairs.

The team is highly customer-focused and solutions-oriented, frequently engaging with campus departments, faculty, staff, and students to meet their needs efficiently. A strong emphasis is placed on team leadership, strategic planning, and workflow management to ensure smooth operations in a high-demand environment.

The primary challenge of this role is balancing a high workload while maintaining clear and proactive communication with stakeholders. The Supervisor must be skilled at prioritizing competing demands, ensuring operational efficiency, and cultivating a culture of excellence.

This role is ideal for a proactive and motivational leader who can mentor a team, implement process improvements, and enhance the customer experience in a thriving campus environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

A. Leadership & Team Development

  • Foster a positive and collaborative work culture, ensuring team members feel supported and motivated.

  • Coach, mentor, and develop employees, promoting professional growth and high performance.

  • Set clear expectations, provide constructive feedback, and recognize outstanding contributions.

  • Conduct performance evaluations and professional development planning to enhance team effectiveness.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for problem resolution and employee engagement initiatives.

B. Customer Service & Operational Oversight

  • Ensure the Lock Shop team provides responsive, high-quality service to faculty, staff, and students.

  • Establish clear communication channels with campus departments to proactively address access and security concerns.

  • Implement customer feedback mechanisms to enhance service delivery and identify areas for improvement.

  • Manage workflow efficiency, ensuring timely completion of work orders and minimal service disruptions.

  • Serve as a liaison between the Lock Shop, Facilities Management, Residence Life, and other campus partners.

C. Security & Access Control System Management

  • Oversee the design and maintenance of campus-wide mechanical and electronic access systems.

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and security best practices in access control.

  • Manage and maintain electronic access records and reports through the Lenel OnGuard System.

  • Develop strategies to optimize security measures while maintaining accessibility for campus users.

  • Collaborate with IT and Facilities teams to implement new access control technologies and system upgrades.

D. Strategic Planning & Process Improvement

  • Assess workload distribution and staffing needs to optimize efficiency and minimize service delays.

  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for lock and access system management.

  • Evaluate and recommend process improvements to enhance the department’s overall effectiveness.

  • Track and analyze work order trends to make data-driven decisions about staffing and resource allocation.

  • Participate in campus-wide safety and security planning initiatives to ensure alignment with institutional goals.

E. General Structural Trades Supervision

  • Oversee select structural trades team members, ensuring high standards for carpentry, door hardware, and minor building repairs.

  • Assign and manage preventative maintenance schedules to prolong the life of campus facilities.

  • Support major campus projects by advising on access control design and hardware specifications.

  • Ensure adherence to building codes, ADA requirements, and industry best practices.

Please note: This position reports to campus Monday - Friday; 7:30am - 4:30pm.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience Only:
  • Six (6) years of experience in an occupation related to structural trades, locksmithing, or access control.

  • Leadership experience in a supervisory role within facilities, maintenance, or security operations.

  • Strong customer service background, with proven ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and managing a team, ensuring efficiency and high performance.

  • Experience with electronic access control systems such as Lenel OnGuard or equivalent platforms.

OR

Education and Experience:

A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to six (6) years. (TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE ATTACHED FOR EDUCATIONAL CREDIT)


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 4 years of direct supervisory experience, leading and developing teams.

  • Certification as a Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL) or equivalent credential.

  • Experience implementing process improvements and strategic planning initiatives in facilities or access control.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to lead through collaboration and positive reinforcement.

  • Prior relevant state experience
