COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE (CPW)

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is a river-based state park that encompasses 152 miles of river corridor between Leadville and Lake Pueblo State Park.  AHRA is co-managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Bureau of Land Management, and the United States Forest Service. The Arkansas River is the most commercially rafted river in the United States.  The most common activities in the park are river rafting (commercial and private), kayaking, fishing, camping, sightseeing, hiking, mountain biking, and gold panning.

PARK MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN - FACILITIES
  • Responsible for all general park maintenance and cleaning of public facilities including: restrooms, vault toilets, campsites, picnic areas, trails, etc. 
  • Operates and performs routine maintenance on State-owned vehicles and equipment. Assures quality customer service and facility maintenance, repair, and cleanliness. 
  • Provides information and assistance to visitors. 
  • May assist with carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work and transporting materials and supplies. 
  • This position is required to utilize equipment such as pressure washers, hand tools, small power tools, shop vac’s, vacuums, park vehicles, and other equipment on a daily basis. 
  • Employees will be required to wear personal protective equipment as necessary. 
  • This position will be expected to assist with other maintenance duties including maintenance of equipment, facilities, and grounds with other assigned duties.
PARK MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN – SPECIAL PROJECTS:
  • May perform facilities duties above in addition to special projects. 
  • Maintains, transports, and operates heavy machinery, including skid steer and mini-excavator. 
  • Grades dirt roads and parking lots. 
  • Cuts and welds metals for various projects, including signage.
RECREATION RANGER:
  • Performs duties related to overall management, including maintenance, customer service, trail maintenance and construction, resource management, and campground operations. 
  • Primarily focused on the management of dispersed camping areas. 
  • Educates public on special camping regulations in the river corridor as well as general Leave No Trace concepts. 
  • Mitigates recreation impacts such as litter, social trails, and camping sprawl.
NATURALIST:
  • A customer service-based position that involves research, planning, advertising, and presenting educational and interpretive programs. Programs include but are not limited to, youth outings and school field trips, archery and fishing programs, campfire talks, and guided hikes. 
  • The Naturalist may also coordinate and schedule guest speakers and volunteer naturalists to conduct and lead programs. 
  • Promoting attendance at programs, roving interpretation, community outreach programs/events
  • Maintaining interpretive displays and bulletin boards throughout the park
  • Assisting with planning, organizing, advertising, and facilitating special events in the park. 
  • The park naturalist will work closely with other volunteers and park staff. In addition, they will correspond with and work professionally with natural resource professionals to maintain and build upon existing programs and partnerships. 
  • The park naturalist will attend agency-sponsored training. Park staff will provide training on specific topics, duties, and policies pertaining to the position upon hire.
VISITOR SERVICES  TECHNICIAN  / CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE:
  • A customer service-based position that may be assigned to work in the field performing specialized duties. Daily interaction with park visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.
  • Staff the park entrance station and/or the visitor center.
  • Provide information and assistance to visitors (distributes maps/brochures, orients visitors to park facilities and amenities, promotes education programs, educates on State Park regulations, etc.)
  • Provide information to the boating and non-boating public.
  • Sell parks passes, permits, books, maps, clothing, firewood and other novelties.
  • May sell campground reservations, gift certificates, search and rescue cards, boat registrations, OHV registrations and snowmobile registrations, fishing and hunting licenses.
  • Operate a cash register.
  • Answering telephones and transferring/taking messages.
  • Photocopying and filing.
  • Collects revenue and balances shift box at the end of each shift. 
  • May document and report visitor complaints. 
  • May assist with special events or programs within the park. 
  • Other duties as assigned. NOTE: One position begins 1/2/2025 and may continue for up to nine months.
COUNT CREW:
  • A customer service position that assists with river services. 
  • Responsible for accurate counting of private boats and recording information on tally sheet standard form
  • Collecting spot checks from commercial outfitters on a standard form
  • Verifying use on Rationed Days (use verification includes being familiar with the AHRA Rationing Plan and each day's Rationed Use in each Section)
  • Collecting trash at assigned sites
  • Driving State vehicles safely and obeying state driving laws
  • Transmitting information as necessary via hand-held or vehicle radios
  • Representing AHRA and State Parks in a positive, professional manner at all times 
  • Providing information to the public to include daily CFS readings
  • Providing accurate, concise, and neat tally sheets
  • Data entry in computer programs
  • Other duties as assigned. 
  • This position requires an individual to work a full day outdoors approximately 80% of the time and a full day indoors approximately 20% of the time.
These positions are 40 hours per week. School schedules MAY be accommodated. REQUIREMENTS: 
ALL POSITIONS:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • May be required to pass drug test prior to hire.
  • This position requires operation of a motorized vehicle, must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Willing to work outside, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Must be able to work various shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications may be required.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
PARK MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN - FACILITIES:
  • Must meet all requirements above
  • Will perform physical activities that include, but are not limited to, lifting 50 lbs. or more.
  • Knowledge of power tools and hand tools preferred. 
  • Knowledge of small engines and other equipment maintenance and repair preferred.
PARK MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN – SPECIAL PROJECTS:
  • Must meet all above requirements above
  • Must possess experience and skills to operate heavy equipment (Excavator, Skid Steer, Backhoe, Tractor, etc.)
  • Previous Heavy Equipment and trail supervision experience preferred
