The Connecticut Airport Authority () (CAA) invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Carpenter (Qualified Craft Worker - Carpentry () ) at Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, CT. This is a full-time, first shift, 40 hour per week position. The schedule is Monday - Friday from 6 : 30 am - 3 : 00 pm.

Your Role :

As a member of the CAA Building Maintenance team, this role will :

Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair automatic sliding and hinged doors;

Troubleshoot, maintain, and perform minor repairs on overhead rollup doors;

Install, maintain and repair locks and locksets, both electric and manual types;

Maintain and repair doors and associated hardware;

Perform general preventive maintenance and repairs on building roofs;

Perform general preventive maintenance and repairs on the roofs and interiors of passenger boarding bridges.

Position Requirements :

There is a one-hour response time when called into work.

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services / Essential Staff. Individuals must be willing and able to work during emergency closures / delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect operations.

Applicants must be willing to respond to system and equipment emergencies, to include days, weekends and holidays.

Incumbents may be required to work Airside or Landside snow removal during winter months from November 1 through April 30, which may be for extended periods.

This position requires a driver’s license.

An individual serving in this position must be able to successfully undergo a thorough background and security screening, physical examination including pre-employment drug screening, fingerprinting and maintain required security clearance during the duration of employment.

Incumbents in this class must obtain Bradley movement area certification, allowing them to independently operate vehicles and equipment on Airfield movement areas while effectively communicating with Air Traffic Control for proper clearance. Movement area certification must be maintained during the duration of employment.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the carpentry trade area.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard carpentry trade practices and codes;

Performs alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities;

Performs skilled bench work, operating with such equipment as power saws, jointers, wood lathes, planers, boring, sanding and mortising machines;

Builds and repairs cabinets;

Cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools;

Lays resilient flooring and Formica;

Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks;

Keeps necessary records;

In smaller trade areas may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area;

May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required;

May cut glass and glaze windows;

May fabricate signs;

May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts;

May operate heavy equipment;

May respond to fire and / or crash emergency situations at state owned airports;

Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard carpentry trade practices;

Skills

Ability to

prepare estimates and keep shop records;

utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in the carpentry trade.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled carpentry trades.

NOTE : For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.

Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Intern in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.

Experience performing technical duties within the carpentry trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in commercial construction.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and / or certifications.

    At the University of Connecticut : Incumbents in this class must have graduated from a vocational or technical school with a diploma and / or official transcript designating completion of course work in carpentry or have equivalent postsecondary formal education from an accredited association or institution.

    CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

    At state airports : In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.

    A physical examination may be required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and / or environmental conditions.

    The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.
