This position receives training under the direction of a supervisor or senior staff for a period of one year. Promotion to Environmental Protection Air Pollution Control Engineer 1 will occur after successful completion of the training program.
- Salary Note: The starting salary for this position is $63,552. Upon successful completion of one year in this class, the incumbent's salary will be $67,343.

- Perform a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.
- Trainees will be required to attend formal training classes and review self-study materials to enhance their knowledge of air pollution control.
- Target position duties include:
- Assisting in the evaluation of all types of air pollution sources and their associated control equipment;
- Assisting with air emission rate calculations, drafting permit language, conducting technical and economic analyses to determine appropriate levels of emissions controls;
- Determining appropriate monitoring and record keeping requirements to assure compliance with the permit language;
- Negotiating permit terms and conditions with permit applicants; and
- Performing related duties as required.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles and methods;
- Skill in the use of drafting and calculating instruments;
- Considerable ability to perform mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details;
- Ability to utilize computer software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical or Environmental Engineering;
- Experience or academic coursework pertaining to the interpretation of state or federal regulations, statutes, or policies;
- Experience or academic coursework pertaining to sources of air pollution and air pollution control technologies;
- Experience or academic coursework pertaining to the Clean Air Act and Clean Air Act Amendment of 1990;
- Experience working on two or more projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines;
- Experience with Microsoft Office including experience or academic coursework pertaining to the use of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) or Javascript to develop macros;
- Experience using computer software to review, analyze, model or present environmental data;
- Experience preparing technical reports;
- Experience communicating verbally, and in writing, to peers, superiors, or the public;
- Experience following oral or written instructions;
- Experience working in a team and on independent projects.
