The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, State Parks Division is currently seeking to fill multiple Seasonal Resource Assistant positions at Fort Trumbull State Park in New London, CT. Since Colonial times Fort Trumbull has served as the location of various military forts, schools and research facilities for the United States Army, Coast Guard and Navy. The first Fort Trumbull was built to protect the New London Harbor from British attack and later served as part of the country’s coastal defense system. The masonry fort (the third) that stands today was constructed between 1839 and 1852. The property was transferred from the federal government to become a state park in 2000. At the Park, visitors can get an interactive history lesson at the visitor's center, or just walk the Fort and ramparts for a view of the Thames River, a visit to Fort Trumbull has something for everyone including a boardwalk and fishing pier. The Fort Trumbull Unit of the CT State Park and Forest System also provides staff support for Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park in Groton, Bluff Point State Park in Groton, and a number of other state lands in the southeast corner of the state.


INTERPRETIVE GUIDE
As a primary visitor contact, works to increase the public's understanding, appreciation, enjoyment of, and concern for the significant historic, cultural and natural resources of our state parks and forests; may conduct a variety of interpretive programs including, but not limited to, lectures, classes, tours, field walks, campfire programs, and special events to a wide variety of audiences; may assist with program development, publicity, exhibit materials, public relations, and related maintenance and cultural duties. Minimum Age: 18 - 5 shifts per week including weekends not exceeding 1,030 hours total.

Maintainer
Performs work related to the maintenance and operation of DEEP managed lands and facilities. Minimum Age: 16 - 5 shifts per week including weekends not exceeding 1,030 hours total.

Crew Leader
Supervises and works with an assigned crew of Seasonal Maintainers in activities involving the operation and maintenance of DEEP programs and facilities. Minimum Age: 18 Seasonal - 5 shifts per week including weekends not exceeding 1,030 hours total.

Park Ranger
Acts as primary visitor contact, interacting with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of the park. Minimum Age: 18 - 5 shifts per week including weekends not exceeding 1,030 hours total.

  • If selected for interview, applicants will be contacted by the divisions hiring supervisor anticipated for March/April of 2025.

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

INTERPRETIVE GUIDE
Experience or education in the natural sciences

MAINTAINER
Experience in custodial work, landscaping or a related skilled trade

CREW LEADER
Experience in custodial work, landscaping or a related skilled trade

PARK RANGER
Experience with outdoor recreation facility operations

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:
    • Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.
    • Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.
    • College training in a specific field.
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.
  • Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.
  • Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
