The State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is looking for a Part-time Telephone Operator to provide essential communication support. Week 1 : Saturday & Sunday (8 : 00 a.m. - 4 : 00 p.m.)

    CMHC is an urban community mental health center with an exceptional 50-year tradition of serving individuals with serious mental illness and / or addiction. Founded in 1966, CMHC is a partnership between DHMAS and the Yale Department of Psychiatry. CMHC is nationally recognized for its scientific research into the causes and treatment of mental illness and addiction. The Abraham Ribicoff Research Facilities include multiple research programs in a variety of areas. CMHC is also a major training site for individuals pursuing careers in mental health fields including psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing and pastoral care.

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks involved in operating a PBX telephone switchboard, desk console, or other electronic telephone system and for acting as a receptionist.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Serves as a central answering point for incoming calls;
  • Determines caller's needs and transfers caller to appropriate extension;
  • Answers telephone inquiries and provides general information regarding activities of the agency;
  • Receives and announces visitors and directs them to their destinations;
  • Uses telephone to locate persons;
  • Performs general clerical duties such as typing, filing, distribution, and processing of mail, receiving deliveries, etc.;
  • May staff communications center for agency;
  • May train relief operators;
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate a PBX telephone switchboard, desk console, or other electronic telephone system;

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

    Six (6) months of experience in the operation of electronic telephone systems or as a PBX or telephone company operator.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

    One (1) year of experience providing regular periodic relief telephone operator coverage in a state agency may be substituted for the General Experience.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in determining and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency situations
  • Experience demonstrating clear communication calmly and effectively
  • Experience in handling confidential information
  • Experience operating communication equipment; including 2-way radios
  • Experience in performing dispatching and record keeping functions
  • WORKING CONDITIONS

    Incumbents in this class may be required to work in tiring positions performing repetitious and monotonous tasks for extended periods of time.
