Introduction

The Wildlife Habitat Management Program is a vital component of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Our team works year-round to maintain and enhance wildlife habitats throughout the state.

Position Highlights:
  • Crew Leader: Leads groups of seasonal maintainers, overseeing tasks, WMA properties, and machinery operations.
  • Maintainers: Maintain wildlife management areas, facilities in Burlington and Franklin, including parking lots, service roads, signs, gates, invasive plant control, tree planting, water control structures, and public shooting ranges.
  • Technical Assistant: Creates GIS maps, manages databases, assists with drafting documents, and provides technical assistance.

Purpose of Job Class: Performs one or more tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature within the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Examples of Duties:
  • Work as a team member or independently, willing to work outdoors in various adverse weather conditions and potentially hazardous field conditions.
  • Obtain a DEEP pesticide applicator's license and assist in herbicide applications.
  • Read paper and digital maps, navigate to worksites, and keep written records.
  • Possess sufficient physical strength and stamina to perform required duties.

Crew Leader Responsibilities:
  • Oversight of other seasonal staff.
  • Assisting in creating work plans and scheduling.
  • Using advanced abilities in specialized trades, operating chainsaws, tractors, and equipment.
  • All duties of Seasonal Maintainer.

Seasonal Maintainer Responsibilities:
  • Maintenance of parking lots, service roads, signs, gates, invasive plant control, tree planting, water control structures, and public shooting ranges.
  • Opportunities to assist on other field projects according to employee interest.

Seasonal Technical Assistant Responsibilities:
  • Creating and managing GIS maps, databases, and project tracking data.
  • Gathering and summarizing data through oral and written communication.
  • Updating and maintaining project and expenditure tracking databases.
  • Visiting sites to aid in habitat management plans and proposals.
  • Assisting with general technical assistance materials and responding to public inquiries.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to follow instructions and possess necessary physical strength and stamina.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience towing utility trailers and operating light and medium-sized equipment.
  • Experience with trade skills, such as carpentry, woodworking, masonry, and tree cutting.
  • Experience with janitorial work.
  • Experience working in Geographic Information System (GIS).

Special Requirements:
  • Incumbents may be required to obtain and retain certifications, licenses, or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  • Physical requirements include possessing and maintaining adequate physical strength and stamina to perform duties.
