Introduction

The Delaware Raptor, Grassland, and Forest Bird Program was created to address many of the most pressing issues affecting avian populations with a focus on raptor and other landbird species. There is a need to continually update data on these species to inform the best management for these species to ensure their long-term presence as part of Delaware’s diverse wildlife resources. Summary Statement

This year round position is with the Delaware's Species Conservation and Research Program to assist the State Raptor, Grassland, and Forest Bird Biologist. Primary responsibilities include avian surveys, identifying birds by sight and sound, monitoring nest boxes as part of the Delaware Kestrel Partnership, installing and maintaining nest boxes, and trapping, capturing and banding various birds of prey, grassland, and forest bird species. Daily work may require walking up to 5 miles in various terrain, operating and maintaining four-wheel drive vehicles, carrying equipment, climbing high ladders, and using binoculars and a spotting scope to distinguish bird species and color bands at a distance. This field work may require long hours under strenuous or uncomfortable field conditions (e.g., heat and humidity, biting insects), on a flexible schedule (some extended days and weekend hours). Must be able to work independently and must be able to work in an efficient manner with good time management. Position will also assist with equipment inventory and maintenance, data entry, communication with the general public and assist with other wildlife research projects. Working with Volunteers may also be expected.

Essential Functions

Provides technical support in studies, surveys, inspections and research projects. Collects field samples and data. Provides technical information and assistance to the public and the regulated community. Interprets rules and regulations for assigned area. Reviews permit applications and supplemental paperwork for approval or recommendation for disapproval. Operates and maintains vehicles, boats and sampling equipment. Maintains accurate records and prepares reports. May assist in processing biological samples.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Control Technician II Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: Six months experience in conducting field work to collect samples and survey data. Six months experience in math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals. Six months experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures. Six months experience in narrative report writing. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
