- Plans and directs the security, control and safety programs within an institution or oversees and coordinates the inspection, security, care and safety programs at all correctional facilities to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.
- Inspects the institutions on a regular basis ensuring that institutional security and sanitation policies and procedures are adequate and being enforced.
- Investigates and is responsible for reporting all irregularities and violations arising in any area of responsibility.
- Assesses and evaluates effectiveness of institutional programs and makes recommendations for change as necessary.
- Assists in the development of institutional policies and procedures and oversees implementation to ensure compliance by staff.
- Participates in classification and treatment boards/committees and oversees inmate classification and subsequent assignment within the institution.
- Coordinates the institutional security operations with the appropriate treatment programs.
- May monitor the work of subordinates and evaluate their performance in light of institutional policy and procedures.
- Prepares a variety of records, reports, and summaries in support of program operational effectiveness.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Correctional Security Superintendent
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
- At least three years experience as a Correctional Lieutenant OR at least two years experience as a Correctional Staff Lieutenant OR at least one year experience as a Correctional Captain or equivalent experience in the CO/series.
- Six months experience in correctional management which includes directing, coordinating and monitoring the daily operations of a correctional facility for security operations, administrative functions and institutional programs.
- Three years experience in ensuring compliance with security and safety standards for correctional facilities.
- Six months experience in making recommendations for continuation or changes to operations, programs, services, policies or procedures based on findings.
- Six months experience in evaluating inmate security levels to determine appropriate housing assignments within a facility.
