Introduction
The centerpiece of Killens Pond State Park, conveniently located in central Delaware, is the 66-acre millpond, which was established in the late 1700s. Before the pond was created, the Murderkill River and surrounding hardwood forest were sites of several Native American homes and hunting camps. Killens Pond became a state park in 1965.
Summary Statement
This position reports to the Park Superintendent and Chief of Interpretation and is responsible for the development of recreational, natural and cultural resource interpretive programs and related materials in Killens Pond State Park. Specifically, this position will develop and conduct public interpretive programs, school field trips, off-site outreach programs, recreational programs (such as canoe / kayak trips and hayrides), and other events with the intent of increasing the public’s awareness of the historic and natural resources of the park and cultivating a sense of stewardship for them. The incumbent is responsible for managing the Killens Pond Nature Center, including its rentals, materials, and exhibits (such as a live animal collection) and working closely with the Park's nonprofit Friends group, government agencies and other environmental organizations in the development of programs.
Preferred Qualification
Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met.
- Knowledge of feeding, monitoring diet, handling, and observing wild / exotic animals in a zoo, livestock farm, wildlife park, or rescue sanctuary.
- Six months experience in designing, developing and implementing historic, cultural or natural resources education programs to meet Department of Education standards.
